Keeping Your Child Safe at Amusement Parks

Unfortunately, we live in a society that causes us to be constant in our vigilant of our children's safety, even in a place that is designed for children's enjoyment such as an amusement, theme park.  Most parks have security procedures at points of entry and are alert to undesirables. Many larger, well known theme parks have uniformed and civilian attired security agents throughout the venue, but as parents that is not enough.  We need to assume that we must watch our children and accompany them at all times.
Here are some basic tips:
1. Do not let your child wear or carry any item with her name on it.
2. Be with her at all times.
3. Many theme parks have 'characters' in costumes that elevate children's enjoyment and excitment, and children sprint to them, easily becoming separated from parents.  Discuss this situation prior to entering the park.
3. Have clear, consistent rules that she must follow such as being with you, not running ahead and listening for your voice.
4. Familiarize yourself with the theme park's emergency plan for 'lost' children, inclement weather, or injured child.
5. Depending upon your child's age and maturation, decide what rides and activities are done together.  You may adjust your 'rule's for preteens and teens depending on this assessment; they may check in with you each hour with their cell phones.  Keep in mind the noise level of the activities.
6. Given all of these precautions, you and your child(ren) will find the day safe and enjoyable.
