Banging That Drum!! Creating Music!!!

Music surrounds us.  Infants recognize parents’ voices and turn their heads towards sounds. Later, infants seem to respond to music, moving their arms or legs.  And that cooing and babbling of infants has pitch and rhythm.

You probably have various mobiles, rattles, and toys that play music or make sounds.  And by their first birthday, infants seem to recognize certain songs.  Nursery rhymes are always a favorite.

Toddlers love drums and toys that they can use for making, creating sounds.  This is the time ‘dancing’ to music happens.

Music and distinguishing sounds can play an important part in young children (preschoolers) recognizing rhyming words, and then discriminating sounds letters make in words when reading.

Young children need lots of opportunity exploring and then creating sounds and music, and listening to and singing songs.  I recommend singing with your children, even though you may not think you sound good—your children love your singing. Children seem to love singing and making music with instruments.  And moving to music seems to be a natural talent for them. Children should experience all types of music—jazz, classical, country, etc...  Take time to enjoy music together!
