University City Patch's resident foodie finally gives Fitz's in the Loop a try.
Whenever we head to the Loop in search of food, I always overlook Fitz’s (6605 Delmar Blvd). It’s not that I had heard negative things or that I have an aversion to root beer. Rather, I think of Fitz’s as a tourist stop and have always had the option of buying their premium sodas in the grocery story. That all changed last week, when I found myself in the Loop with my brother, who was craving a hamburger, and my husband, who wanted to sit outside. With a large patio and a menu featuring nearly a dozen different burgers, I could make two of my favorite men happy. Win and win. As enjoyable as it was to enjoy the summer-like weather sitting under an umbrella on the patio, I was tempted to take a seat indoors, where customers have a front row …

Rob Levy works at Subterranean Books in University City. Each month, he recommends five books.
A survey of interesting titles, must-reads and best sellers from Subterranean Books, University’s City’s only neighborhood bookstore. Arguably By Christopher Hitchens The recently departed Hitchens never held back from controversy in speaking his mind. His pen was often times a glib instrument of anger, rage, irony and common sense. Yet as he observed the world around him, Hitchens never held back. He often was sensible and infuriating, intense but carefree. His range of topics covered history, popular culture, politics and the literary world. Whatever caught his fancy was subject to close scrutiny via essays and editorials. Arguably collects bunches of Hitchens' best essays on an array of topics, everything from Lebanon and Henry VII to …
Joe Edwards said he'd like to see the camera system up and running by March at the latest.
In its bid to hire a firm to oversee the installation of a video surveillance system in the Loop, the City of University City said the system will need to be operational by June. However, Joe Edwards wants the security system up and running a lot sooner than that. At Tuesday's meeting of the Loop Special Business District, Edwards, owner of Blueberry Hill and other popular Loop destinations, said he'd like to see the surveillance system operational by March at the latest. While the cameras had been in the works for sometime, business owners really pushed for them after a particularly disruptive weekend last April in the Loop, which involved hundreds of unruly young people. "Maybe they can speed it up," Edwards said to Raymond Lai, Deputy …

Yesterday I hosted the monthly meeting of Women in the Neighborhood or WIN. This is a group that was organized more than ten years ago by local of volunteers who saw the benefit of providing U City women the opportunity to visit with neighbors who they might not otherwise meet. Those attending talk about U City issues and events, and have, in the past, worked together on new projects to benefit our town. Yesterday, the topic of conversation was the new University City Chamber of Commerce which held its kick-off meeting in October. School Board member Ellen Bern, who is stepping down from that job in April, is the part-time Executive Director of the Chamber, and attended the meeting to discuss the new organization and take questions.
