Fall Fire Festival Is Saturday at the Green Center

The annual event begins at 5:30 p.m.

The annual Fall Fire Festival at the Green Center is Saturday, Nov. 3. The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available online at the thegreencenter.org. Adults are $10 and children are $5. Adult tickets at the door are $15. The fire festival includes fire performers, jugglers, hoopers, art exhibits, bonfires, stories and food and beverages. Green Center Fundraiser Set for Saturday

University City's Green Center will host its third annual Green Tie Affair to raise funds for environmental and educational programs.

This Saturday offers University City residents a chance to wine, dine and support the environment, education and the arts when The Green Center holds its third annual Green Tie Affair. The event will give attendees a chance to wander the Center's grounds in Kaufman Park while enjoying food and brews from local providers. Backdoor Harvest and other area artisans will be on hand to provide demonstrations, and live music will be provided by the U City Jazz Band and Yacob Bashkin.  Proceeds from the evening will go toward funding the Center's mission of connecting children and adults to the environment through education, hands-on experiences and art. Runners tookd to the streets Monday to benefit University City Public Library, U City in Bloom, University City Children's Center and the Green Center.  The 38th annual University City Memorial Day run brought out 1,400 runners to the streets of University City.

University City to Hold Annual Memorial Day Run

The 38th annual run is Monday, May 28.

Runners will take to the streets today to benefit University City Public Library, U City in Bloom, University City Children's Center and the Green Center.  The 38th annual University City Memorial Day run is today, with the first race beginning at 7:30 a.m. The event was started in 1974 and taken over by the University City Library in 1984. For the next 16 years, the library was the sole organizer. It raised roughly $150,000 over those years, according to Linda Ballard. "It was a good fundraiser for us," she said. In 1999, Ballard found she couldn't organize the run as it coincided with her son's graduation. That was the only year the race has not been run since 1974. Green Center, Camp CentCom Deadlines Approaching

Camp registrations deadlines are fast approaching.

Looking for a great local summer camp for the kids? Look no further - there are several camps in and around University City.  Green Center's Nature Explorer Camps The Green Center’s Nature Explorer Camps will allow students to explore our prairie, forest, wetland, greenhouse and discovery garden outdoor classrooms.  Programming will take place both indoors and outdoors. Students should dress appropriately for the weather. Please note: Students do need to bring a lunch each day. Registration deadlines are May 21 for Session I of the Nature Photography Camp; May 28 for the Nature Play Camp and July 16 for Session II of the Nature Photography Camp. 38th Annual U City Memorial Day Run Is May 28

Event benefits local non-profit groups.

The 38th annual University City Memorial Day Run will be held May 28.The 10K and 5K runs run concurrently and begin at 7:30 a.m., an earlier start time this year.  The race benefits The Green Center, U City in Bloom, The University City Children's Center and the University City Public Library. Participants in the 5 and 10K events should be at the start in front of the University City Public Library by 7:20 a.m. The Fun Runs will be held on Trinity Avenue in the neighborhood behind City Hall and will begin at 9:15 a.m. for children 9 and older, and at 9:30 a.m. for those 8 and under.  T-shirts will be guaranteed for all runners entering by May 4. Students Learn about Nature; Showcase Art at The Green Center

The center unveiled the artwork of 24 students that will be on display through September 22.

The Green Center in University City has a student art exhibit now on display through the end of the month. This past Thursday, the center hosted an opening reception for “Connecting with Nature” - an exhibit which features drawings, poetry, and photography - the majority done by 7th graders from Brittany Woods Middle School, who took part in a summer camp at The Green Center. Twenty-four students participated in the program, attending every day for a week, said Jan Oberkramer, the interim executive director of the center.  “The kids seemed to thoroughly enjoy it. The Green Center Helps Students Beautify Their School Grounds

Staff and volunteers helped students at Jefferson Elementary in St. Louis plant native Missouri plants.

The Green Center helped students at Jefferson Elementary School in St. Louis beautify their building last week. According to a press release, volunteers and staff at The Green Center helped students plant a native garden in front of the school. The event took place on Wednesday, May 18. Staff and volunteers helped Ms. McDevitt’s second and third grade students plant Missouri native plants along their main entrance way.  Hundreds of plants were put in the ground that afternoon with many helping hands.
