The University City City Council voted to turn the lights back on Monday.
Over a year after the lights on the driving range at Ruth Park Golf Course were turned off, the University City City Council voted Monday to reverse that decision. The lights were turned off after residents near the University City driving range complained that they were too bright. Before the policy change, the range lights would stay on until 9:30 p.m. The council voted 4-3 to turn the lights back on while the Park Commission and Traffic Commission review a report on additional options for the driving range. The issue was raised by Ward 1 Councilman Terry Crow. Michael Glickert, Stephen Kraft and Mayor Shelley Welsch voted against the measure. University City has hired a landscape architect to look at the driving range lights issue and hopefully come up with a compromise.

City Manager Lehman Walker said he inherited the issue of the Ruth Park driving range lights and is doing his best to find a compromise. At Tuesday’s park commission meeting, Walker took questions from the commissioners concerning his decision in May to permanently turn off the range lights after neighbors across the street from the range complained of light spillage into their homes. "I believe the lights are problematic," Walker told the commissioners. "It's a problem I inherited. It's a problem I'm making every effort to address." Walker said University City has hired the landscape architect firm Austin Tao & Associates to look at the lighting issue and make some recommendations to the city. A University City resident frustrated by the city manager's decision to permanently turn off the lights at the Ruth Park Driving Range has taken to the Web. Ed Mass has created a website for residents to send emails to the city manager, mayor, and city council asking them to turn the lights back on until 9:00pm. The website also links to a page that lists off various points to argue in favor of turning on the lights. The range lights have been off for several months. Residents complained that the lights were too bright.
