Rory Ellinger (D-University City). Rep. Ellinger, along with three other St. Louis representatives, filed House Bill 545. I respect Rep. Ellinger, and I know he believes he is doing the right thing by introducing this bill. But I cannot agree. The University CIty City Council meets tonight.
The University City City Council is slated to meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at University City City Hall. Items on the agenda include: Proclamations Appointments Swearing In City Manager's Report Council Reports/Business The council will also discuus Police Safety Seminars. The seminars are slated for: Unfinished Business New Business The meeting is open to the public.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama issued 23 executive actions and is urged Americans to put pressure on Congress to pass his proposed changes, including universal background checks on gun sales, a ban military-style assault rifles and limited ammunition magazines. In response to the President's gun control plan, the coalition Mayors Against Illegal Guns issued statements from 30 mayors nationwide.. Following the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, should we expect to see stricter laws regarding gun purchases in the United States?
The question reemerges after every mass shooting in America: are more stringent gun control laws necessary to prevent future shootings? It's a question that was posed after the shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, CO in July. Posting an armed officer in every School District of University City school and in schools across the country is the goal of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the guns-rights lobby announced on Friday. Legislation being prepared to ban assault-style weapons; President to make the issue "central" to his second term
With the national conversation centering on gun control legislation following the tragic school shooting in Newtown, CT, and the National Rifle Association scheduling a press conference Friday to weigh in on the issue, weapons of all sorts are flying off the shelves in at least one local gun store. "We're busier now than we've ever been," said Scott Schoenbeck, general manager of Ontargetstl.com, a Valley Park shooting range and gun store. University City — At a time like this it is difficult to know how to respond to the mass killing of innocent souls and impossible to find words to comfort the survivors. Unfortunately, we have had far too many times like this. Each time a gunman enters a school, or a theater, or a mall and begins randomly killing people, our nation grieves and struggles to understand how such tragedies occur. We debate the effectiveness of our mental health programs, we argue over gun control measures, we vow it will never happen again, and then it does. The fact most of the latest victims are young children shocks our conscience, but will it motivate us to consider meaningful change? Perhaps the answer lies not with our leaders in Washington, D.C. but …

The St. Louis area represents both extremes in the debate in a single week.
There's no way to avoid it. The gun control debate re-emerges with every shooting like the one on Friday morning in Aurora, CO: A man kills 12 and wounds more than 50 in a movie theater at a premiere of the latest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." On one end of the gun debate, Missouri Rep. John McCaherty (R-90th District), of High Ridge, is set to raffle off the civilian version of the military M16 rifle at a fundraising dinner Aug. 27. The rifle is a legally owned AR15 rifle that was given to him by the NRA.
