Pita Pit: A New Twist on Food in the Delmar Loop

The new restaurant is owned by 24-year-old Jordan Martin.

What do you do when you graduate from college, head back to your hometown and start to miss your favorite restaurant? You open one, of course.  Jordan Martin, 24, opened Pita Pit this month in the Delmar Loop. He discovered the healthy food chain while he attended Temple University. "I knew I wanted to be in this area," Martin told Patch. "I looked a couple of other locations in the Loop, then over by SLU, but this spot just seemed right." This spot is next to Tavolo V and just across from The Pageant. To accommodate his late night neighbors, Pita Pit is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10:30 am. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Wash U: Delmar Loop Garage Digging Finishing Soon

The digging of the garage for the Delmar Loop project could be done by the end of the month, weather permitting.

Work on Washington University's $80 million development in the Delmar Loop has progressed steadily since ground was first broken in February. Now, the digging for the garage is nearly complete. Cheryl Adelstein, Wash U's Director of Community Relations and Local Government Affairs, told the Loop Special Business District that the excavationfor the garage should be done by the end of the month, weather permitting. She added that if things stay on schedule, a roof could be up on the garage by the end of July.  Adelstein also provided some other updates via a memo to the city. Mi Ranchito is the King of Burritos and Salsa, While Flaco’s Perfects Fish Tacos

RFT readers ranked the U City eateries the best in St. Louis for these Mexican dishes.

Craving Mexican food? There’s no shortage of options in U City, but two reign supreme. RFT readers chose Mi Ranchito as the St. Louis area’s favorite place for both burritos and salsa, the publication revealed in its Restaurants 2013 guide. “If you can pull yourself away from the killer margs or colorful murals long enough to focus on the menu at Mi Ranchito, head straight for the burritos,” RFT advises. Runners up include Chimichanga’s Mexican Restaurant, Torillaria, El Maguey and Pueblo Solis. The restaurant’s variety of salsas pulled it past Tortillaria, Pueblo Solis, Hacienda and Chava’s Mexican Restaurant to be called the ‘best.’ Their margaritas ranked third. The guacamole at Pueblo Solis did manage to keep Mi Ranchito’s in second.  …

Report: U City's Nelly to Play The Pageant in August

Nelly will play a benefit for Vatterott College.

University City's own Nelly is coming home to play the Delmar Loop. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Nelly will play The Pageant on Aug. 3. The event is a fundraiser for Vatterott College. Tickets for the event are $36 and will go on sale at 5 p.m. Friday, the Post reports. Nelly's Ex'Treme Institute is part of Vatterott College. #STL735 Rally Takes to the Streets in the Delmar Loop

Strike efforts began on Wednesday at Jimmy John's and McDonald's locations, and continue this week across the area.

Striking fast food workers across St. Louis took to the streets Thursday afternoon in University City.  On Wednesday workers from Jimmy John's and McDonald's stores walked out in a push for respect through better pay and improved working conditions. Shannon Garth-Rhodes, spokesperson with the effort, said some Jimmy John's employees were subjected to forms of mental abuse. Garth-Rhodes told Patch this is part of a fight for the right to form a union without retaliation. "Workers will strike for a $15 per hour wage floor and to take a stand against unfair retaliation targeting workers who are sticking together to speak out for better jobs," she said. Teen Artists Sought for Community Arts Lab in the Loop

The new project will provide a space for teenage artists to create.

University City teenagers are spearheading a research project that will create a teen arts lab in the Delmar Loop. The Community Studio Inspiring Research, Knowledge and Leadership Teen ARTS Lab. Part of the task force was seeking to find safe places for teenagers to hang out in University City.  Once that task force completed its findings, some of its teenage members wanted to take another step and find a space for creative teenagers to express themselves through art. Deborah Horsfall-Morley is one of the volunteers helping the young people. She said the current group of 5-6 teenager leaders is looking to add a few more people to their ranks.  The group is looking for additional juniors and seniors in high school to intern this summer. …
