Gov. Nixon Endorses Clay in 1st District Race

Endorsements are piling up for both candidates.

Rep. William Lacy Clay scored a major endorsement today from the head of Missouri's Democratic Party. Gov. Jay Nixon issued a press release in support of Clay, who faces a primary fight from fellow incumbent Democrat Rep. Russ Carnahan. "For over 25 years, Lacy Clay has been a powerful voice for working families and a tireless advocate for the people of St. Louis," Nixon said. "He’s the right man to continue serving the people of the First Congressional District, and I fully support his re-election." St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley backed Clay almost immediately after Carnahan got into the 1st District contest. He also received the support of the local AFL-CIO on April 4. “Organized labor is …

It's (Kind Of) the End of the Filing Period as We Know It

Some candidates withdrew, while other incumbents, including Creve Coeur State Rep. Jill Schupp, will go unopposed.

Now that the filing period to sign up for state legislative races is over, things are beginning to be a little clearer about what’s to come during the impending election cycle. Locally the main event will most likely be the 1st Congressional District race that features Reps. Russ Carnahan (D-St. Louis City) and Lacy Clay (D-St. Louis City). Barring a Missouri Supreme Court ruling that chucks the redistricted congressional map, both candidates remain on the ballot to run in the district that includes all of St. Louis City and a portion of St. Louis County. The battle between Clay and Carnahan is one notable primary set to occur during the 2012 election cycle. There is, after all, a dizzying eight-way Democratic race for lieutenant governor…

Chaos in Missouri's GOP Caucus Process

St. Charles County caucuses sparked nationwide coverage.

Missouri’s first round of caucuses are now over, leaving behind a virtual trail of tranquility and chaos. Chaos was the case in St. Peters, where the St. Charles County Republican Caucus ended without any delegates being allocated. The confrontational event became a national story, resulting in stories both on CNN and in the New York Times. [Click here for Wentzville Patch’s two-part series on what exactly happened at the event.] Because of that event, and other examples of confusion detailed in the national and local media, the GOP caucuses were generally perceived of being chaotic and unorganized. Former Sen. Jim Talent (R-MO) appeared on KSDK on Sunday, for instance, and described the process in a rather negative light. So what happens …

Carnahan Fight With Clay Has U CIty Implications

Plus: Updated caucus locations, and a look ahead to St. Louis County Lincoln Days.

The kickoff of Missouri’s biennial filing day is often littered with surprises. But this year’s iteration may have taken the cake. Obviously, the biggest news is U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan’s decision to run in the 1stCongressional District, which includes University City. The St. Louis City Democrat had considered running in the GOP-leaning 2nd Congressional District, which now includes Creve Coeur after redistricting, but instead decided to enter into a race that will have him battling U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay (D-St. Louis City). That race will be closely watched, since the district that encompasses all of St. Louis City and some of St. Louis County has a heavy Democratic lean. In essence, winning the Democratic primary is tantamount to election…

Russ Carnahan Filing to Run in Clay's District

Politico reports both men will run in the 1st District.

Rep. Russ Carnahan has filed to run for reelection in the 1st Congressional District. Carnahan currently represents the 3rd District. The 1st Congressional District, which includes University City and Florissant, is represented by Rep. William Lacy Clay. Clay also has indicated he will run for reelection. According to Politico, Carnahan decided to run in the 1st District after it became clear that his 3rd District was being reconfigured to lean Republican. The two men will have to face off in a Democratic primary.  Carnahan will address the media at 10:45 a.m. at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Patch will have an update following his remarks.
