Vernon's BBQ at 6707 Vernon Avenue in University City offers BBQ lovers a new twist on old favorites.

Vernon's BBQ is a causal place. You order at the counter, eat off paper trays with plastic forks and serve yourself from the soda machine and sauce bar. But the food is not simple. It's pure BBQ goodness, smoked right on the parking lot and served up with special dry rub spices. The sauce is served at a communal bar because each unique sauce, from sweet and tangy 'Lou style to XXX hot sauce, is served warm. Why warm? Staff at Vernon's say the sauce is just better that way. Why spoil your hot plate of ribs with cold crusty sauce that's been sitting on the table? Really looking forward to visiting Vernon's after my return from Belize. Will hafta go a long long way to compete against the old McCrary's BBQ...which was harrassed out of business by the U.City goon's at City Hall. But, that's another story.   more ›

Restaurant Roundup: Commercial Shoot in Loop, New BBQ

McDonalds recently shot a commercial in the Delmar Loop.

A film crew was in University City earlier this week to shoot a commercial for McDonalds'. The crew shot along the Chuck Berry Statue in the Delmar Loop. The Riverfront Times Gut Check blog reports that the spot is part of a new series called "Good Morning, STL." Tina Cross, a freelancer serving as the line producer for the commercial, told the RFT she thinks this is one of many advertising campaigns targeting a specific region or city that McDonald's is beginning to produce all over the U.S. The commercial also shot downtown and at Lambert St. Louis International Airport.  Vernon's Gets a Rave Review The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reviewed five new barbecue joints in the St. Louis area, giving Vernon's BBQ in University City high marks.  The…

As always, lots going on in the food world around University City and the Delmar Loop. Vernon's BBQ is now open in University City. The barbecue joint, located at 6707 Vernon, is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. To see a menu, click here.
