Ten football players and one field hockey player are going on to play their sport in college.
A record number of University City High School seniors signed letters of intent to play their sport at the next level Wednesday evening, on the day known as National Signing Day. See more photos of the signing at University City Patch Facebook. University City Principal Michael Maclin said the 11 student-athletes on the stage are the largest group of seniors from the school to sign letters of intent at one time. "There are 1.7 million high school athletes in the United States, 308,221 of them are seniors, and 5.7 percent go on to play college athletics," Maclin said. They're going to Ball State, Washburn University, University of Nebraska at Kearney, Lindenwood University, Truman State and Missouri Valley University. One field hockey and …

Visit the Ballwin-Ellisville Patch's Facebook page for more photos from the game, Blaine Gabbert jersey retirement ceremony and Senior Night celebrations. It will be homecoming for the Lions when they host Seckman in a Suburban South Conference game.
The University City football team has few secrets. “People know we can score the football, but people know we've had trouble stopping people from scoring,” U City coach Carl Reed said. “This week we're hoping to get a little defensive intensity and try to slow down the other team a little bit.” The Lions (1-3, 1-3) will host Seckman (1-2, 1-2) for their homecoming game at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in a Suburban South Conference game. The Lions are averaging more than three touchdowns per game behind senior quarterback DeAndre Williams, who has two games with over 300 yards passing. Williams, whose favorite target is senior receiver Alex Henry, is also capable of successfully running the draw. But the issue is on defense for the Lions. The …

The Lions offense has had a great season, but the U.City defense has been weak and was no match for Parkway Central in a 57-27 loss in week four.
Since the start of preseason training camp, Parkway Central’s Brandon Sheperd has been one of the most lauded and talked about high school football players in the area. And for good reason. Sheperd was part of a potent Colts attack that jumped all over University City early on Friday night. Sheperd is considered one of the top prep receivers in the nation, and he’s being recruited by nearly every top college program in the Midwest, who all hope that he’ll choose their school to play ball at next season. But on Friday night, a new star emerged for the Colts and stole the show (at least temporarily) from the superstar Sheperd. Central running back Alan Gasanli, who came into Friday’s contest with Suburban South Conference rival University …
Central running back Alan Gasanli rushes for a career-high 254 yards and five touchdowns in the Colts’ 57-27 win over U. City.
Parkway Central jumped out to a 29-0 first-half lead, and rode the wave of that big advantage to a 57-27 Homecoming night win over the University City Lions in a Suburban South Conference game Friday night at PCH Stadium. Senior running back Alan Gasanli had the night of his life carrying the ball for the Colts. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound speedster finished the night with 254 yards on 21 carries and five touchdowns, including scoring jaunts of 2, 8, 70, 29, and 30 yards in Central’s fourth straight win to start the season. University City quarterback DeAndre Williams also had a big night, rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown, and passing for 255 yards and three touchdowns in the Lions’ losing effort. Please tune into Patch.com on Saturday …

The Lions are coming off of a big win last week, but now have to travel to play undefeated Parkway Central in the Colts' homecoming game.
Friday Night Lights: University City (1-2) at Parkway Central (3-0) University City went just 1-9 in the 2010 season, but already earned its first win of this year by stunning Parkway North last week, 25-20. The Lions will visit Parkway Central on Friday night at 7 p.m. in a Suburban South Conference game. Senior quarterback DeAndre Williams had a breakout performance for the Lions, passing for 339 yards and three touchdowns, along with a touchdown run as U. City held off the visiting Vikings in a thrilling early evening game. Williams’ favorite passing targets are Alex Henry and Mario Wallace, a pair of dynamic seniors that make a lot of plays for the Lions offense. Wallace leads the Suburban South in average yards per catch, while Henry …

The Lions' passing game, led by quarterback DeAndre Williams, will look to race past the short-handed Parkway North defense.
Friday Night Lights: Parkway North (1-1) at University City (0-2) Friday at 4:15 p.m. — Muhl-Schemmer Stadium Two of the Suburban South Conference’s speedier lineups will meet in a critical league matchup at U. City’s Muhl-Schemmer Stadium on Friday afternoon. The Lions are coming off two rough defeats at the hands of Parkway West and Webster Groves, while the visiting Vikings are coming off their own tough loss last week against Rockwood Summit. Parkway North is also dealing with the uncertain health of star running back/linebacker Donavin Newsom. One of the state’s most-prized recruits, with scholarship offers from many top-level colleges, including a non-binding verbal commitment to the University of Missouri, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound …

New Lions head coach Carl Reed hopes he can guide his team toward improvement after a 1-9 season in 2010.
New University City football coach Carl Reed has simple and straightforward goals for the 2011 campaign. “We want to try and be competitive in every game,” Reed said. Reed, 30, has solid roots in St. Louis-area football, as he played for Hazelwood Central. After graduating from high school in 1999, Reed continued his career with Austin Peay State University, a Division I school in Clarksville, Tenn. Reed was hired late in March to replace Rob Battle, who coached the Lions to a very disappointing 1-9 record in 2010. Battle was preceded by Duane Hawthorne, who led the Lions to four solid seasons from 2006-2009. Hawthorne, who led U. City to a 6-6 mark in 2009, is currently preparing for his first season at Hazelwood West. Reed started his …

New University City football coach Carl Reed will be looking to install more of a passing-oriented attack this fall.
A 7-on-7 football tournament is the perfect opportunity to showcase the quarterbacks. It can also be a good testing ground for new coaches. There were plenty of each on display Saturday at De Smet Jesuit High School. The St. Louis Metropolitan Football Coaches Association held its inaugural 7-on-7 tourney at De Smet with 23 teams from Missouri and Illinois participating. Top area quarterbacks like Dalton Demos of Christian Brothers College, Gateway Tech’s Paul Rice, Ladue’s Brandon Carr, De Smet’s Conner Harrison, Fort Zumwalt West’s Drew Hare and Lindbergh’s Peter Simpson all aired it out without having to worry about getting hit by an oncoming rush. The tournament was two-hand touch, played without pads and had no rushing attempts. “The …
