Sunday Brought More Snow to University City

Sunday's weather forecast was more deja vu for University City residents.

Is it me or is it starting to feel like the movie Groundhog Day in University City. Another day, another snowy forecast.

University City Mayor Attends Conference of Mayors in Washington, DC

Mayor Shelley Welsch sent University City Patch an email detailing her trip to Washington, DC for the annual Conference of U.S. Mayors.

Today I will leave for Washington, D.C.  It will be nice to be back in the nation’s capital again – I used to live there when I worked for ABC Network News. But this time I’m going for my new job.  The U.S. Conference of Mayors is holding its 79th Winter Meeting and I will be one of the new mayors in attendance. The group is solicitous of us newcomers – they assign us a seasoned “buddy” mayor, and mine, I am happy to say, is St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay.  I hope to work with Mayor Slay on a number of issues in the coming years, so I am pleased that I might have the chance to get to know him a bit better.  (I’ve met with Mayor Slay once since I took office.  I set up meetings with mayors of surrounding communities to introduce myself.  I …

On The Mind of The Mayor

Arizona Does Not Seem So Far Away

This is an excerpt from Mayor Shelley Welsch's personal website. To hear more about what the mayor has in store for U City go to http://www.ucitymo.com.

Back in September 2001, after the 9-11 horrors, I must admit I felt a sense of resentment at how our world changed.  Not the huge change – the wars in which our country is embroiled – that makes me sad and angry.  But the smaller changes.  The having to collect 3-ounce or less toiletries if I wanted to carry luggage on a plane; hearing about threat levels much too often; the feeling that our national legislators lost sight of all issues except war; the sense that education, and the arts and the environment would not be funded and recognized as the important part of human life that they are until after we “won” a war that was not an “official” war.  Who knows how long that will be?  I just felt, and feel, frustrated. A little more than a …

Myra's Musings

Tradition or Tightwad?

By the time my family buys a Christmas tree it's basically a fire hazard.

My husband says it's his family tradition. I think he's being a cheapskate. We wait until Christmas Eve to buy our Christmas tree.  Why? He says it's because both of his parents worked and that was the only time they had to get a tree. There's also another reason which he refers to as "just one of the bonuses." That's because Christmas Eve is when the trees go on sale.  So, instead of shelling out $60.00 for a Fraser Fir, we get it for $30.00. And my husband is ecstatic at his cost-savings. But by the time Christmas Eve comes the trees are looking haggard, with pine needles hanging on for dear life. I'm scared the lights will instantly ignite the tree. And I swear you can hear the branches moan from dehydration when we hang the ornaments on…

Honor for University City's First Black City Manager

City Manager Lehman Walker was honored at Monday night's City Council meeting.

City Manager Lehman Walker was honored by members of the Missouri House of Representatives at Monday night's city council meeting. Walker took the city manager  job in August. Previously, he served as University City's Director of Community Development for 12 years. State Representative Maria Chappelle-Nadal presented Walker with a resolution extolling his "significant contributions of time and energy," to the residents of U City. It also honored him for being U City's first African American city manager.  Walker said the honor was very special to him. "University City has a population that is nearly 50 percent African American and I think that it's important that I serve as a role model and demonstrate my capacity to perform well in this …
