U City in Bloom Plant Sale Is Today, Tomorrow

The sale will be held at the Heman Park Community Center.

Today is the day: the U City in Bloom annual plant sale will be held today and tomorrow. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, at the Heman Park Community Center. The fundraising event is a significant source of income to U City in Bloom, contributing more than 80 percent of the group's fundraising budget. This year the group will offer perennial plants, a large variety of annuals, native and wildlife attracting plants, culinary herbs and vegetables. Resident experts also will be on hand to recommend native plants for any gardeners participating in the RainScape home gardening program. The University City gardening group's annual bulb sale is Oct. 13 in the Delmar Loop.

The annual U City in Bloom Bulb Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Delmar Loop. Patrons should look for the tent located on west side of the Saint Louis Bread Co. At the sale, home gardeners are offered bulbs that are both of high quality and recommended for their sustainability in our climate. Purchasing bulbs at the U City in Bloom bulb sale supports the planting of hundreds of new bulbs annually in the public flower beds in the University City community. Each spring the multitude of colorful flowering bulbs throughout the city both welcomes and announces the new season.  This year patrons could pre-order bulbs and pay for them online. U City in Bloom's Bird Habitat Receives $5,000 Grant

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded the matching grant for the newest garden maintained by the great gardeners of University City.

U City in Bloom has received a grant funding for its new Bird Habitat Garden at Centennial Commons.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded a $5,000 matching grant to U City in Bloom to further the establishment of the garden. Additional funding has been provided by the Boeing Employees Fund, in partnership with the U. City Parks Foundation; the Cathleen Creley Fund of the St. Louis Audubon Society; and private donors through U City in Bloom.  The aid of the University City Parks Department has been indispensable, according to Helen Fuller. Consultation and direction of the development of the garden has been provided by the St. Louis Audubon Society and Cindy Gilberg, a noted native plant expert.  The Bird Habitat Garden is located in …

U City in Bloom Is Going to the Birds

The non-profit is holding a fundraising event Sept. 30.

U City in Bloom is going to the birds. The non-profit organization, which maintains 325 public gardens in University City, is holding a party to fund its latest project. The group has created a new bird habitat and is having a party, "It's for the Birds," to raise funds for the venture.  This gala evening event will include wine and appetizers in the Bird Garden, a silent auction featuring decorative bird cages and artist decorated bird houses, music and dinner. The event is slated for 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Centennial Commons. The guests attending this event will include major birders and first class gardeners and members of the St. Louis Audubon Society.   When completed, the garden will include a water feature, native plants, …

Runners ran the streets of University City Monday.

Runners tookd to the streets Monday to benefit University City Public Library, U City in Bloom, University City Children's Center and the Green Center.  The 38th annual University City Memorial Day run brought out 1,400 runners to the streets of University City.

University City to Hold Annual Memorial Day Run

The 38th annual run is Monday, May 28.

Runners will take to the streets today to benefit University City Public Library, U City in Bloom, University City Children's Center and the Green Center.  The 38th annual University City Memorial Day run is today, with the first race beginning at 7:30 a.m. The event was started in 1974 and taken over by the University City Library in 1984. For the next 16 years, the library was the sole organizer. It raised roughly $150,000 over those years, according to Linda Ballard. "It was a good fundraiser for us," she said. In 1999, Ballard found she couldn't organize the run as it coincided with her son's graduation. That was the only year the race has not been run since 1974.
