Resident foodie Natalie McLaury checks out Frida's Deli, the newest restaurant in University City
There’s a new restaurant in University City, off of the Loop and on North and South Road, a few doors down from Momo’s Ouzario Taverna. I stopped in at Frida’s Deli (622 North and South Rd) when it was less than a week old. The restaurant itself is tiny—if you come with a party more than two, don’t expect to find a table. With only five tabletops and a small counter, there’s little room for anything more than ordering. Even the bathroom requires a walk behind the counter and through the kitchen. The space is more about grabbing and going—perfect for the lunch crowd in and around U City. The deli brings something that Snarf’s and Meshuggah Café do not: a completely vegetarian menu. Not only is their menu strictly vegetarian, but it also …

Patch's resident foodie Natalie McLaury gives you the low-down on trying Indian food at Gokul Indian Restaurant.
In the realm of different food cuisines, I find that Indian food tends to be more feared than others. You can convince your friends to order Chinese takeout or grab some sushi, but I’ve noticed when I mention Indian people suddenly wrinkle their noses. I can certainly understand where they’re coming from; Indian food is less common and it uses less familiar ingredients. Trying Indian food is a bit of an adventure, but I’m convinced that once people give it a chance, they’ll realize they actually do like Indian cuisine. My most recent Eating My Way Through University City adventure was to Gokul Indian Restaurant (6101 Delmar Blvd) on the northern end of Delmar Boulevard. My husband and I visited the restaurant on a Thursday evening. We’d …

University City Patch's resident foodie finally gives Fitz's in the Loop a try.
Whenever we head to the Loop in search of food, I always overlook Fitz’s (6605 Delmar Blvd). It’s not that I had heard negative things or that I have an aversion to root beer. Rather, I think of Fitz’s as a tourist stop and have always had the option of buying their premium sodas in the grocery story. That all changed last week, when I found myself in the Loop with my brother, who was craving a hamburger, and my husband, who wanted to sit outside. With a large patio and a menu featuring nearly a dozen different burgers, I could make two of my favorite men happy. Win and win. As enjoyable as it was to enjoy the summer-like weather sitting under an umbrella on the patio, I was tempted to take a seat indoors, where customers have a front row …

Authentic Jamaican food, right on Olive Blvd.
I haven’t come across a whole lot of Jamaican restaurants in the St. Louis area, but leave it to University City to be home to one. Located in the same strip mall as Hooked Seafood Bar and Pho Long, De Palm Tree doesn’t look like much. Step inside, however, and enter another world. The restaurant is small and dark. Tables crowd the place but it manages to feel cozy, not cramped. The scent of jerk spices easily passes through the large Bob Marley flag that is serving as a divider between the dining area and the kitchen. After almost heading there on a Monday afternoon and discovering it was the one day they were closed, my husband and I stopped in for an early dinner on a Tuesday evening. The place was nearly empty and we were …

University City Patch's resident foodie Natalie McLaury shares the scoop on her latest dining experience, Chinese Noodle Cafe.
Although the Chinese Noodle Café, located at 6138 Delmar Blvd., is easy to miss, with just a tiny storefront one block east of Skinker Blvd., its award status with the Riverfront Times proves it’s anything but forgotten: Best Chinese Restaurant 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011! After seeing it win a few years in a row, my husband and I finally headed there for a quick dinner one weeknight. It’s apparent that owner Peggy Hou and her employees are deeply committed to ensuring their customers have a positive experience. They were very attentive - making multiple menu suggestions, re-filling water glasses, and helping me pack up my to-go bag, all without prompting. I can’t complain, however, because it was per Peggy’s insistence …

University City Patch's resident foodie shares the scoop on her latest culinary experience, taking part in a Macaron Making Class in Clayton.
Before I began cooking regularly, everything in the kitchen intimidated me. I remember the first time I tackled yeast bread, something I'd long been afraid of. Then, there was my first layer cake. Despite a few lumps in the frosting, I put the cake together beautifully. Those were the successes! Then there are the things I have yet to tackle...my first attempt at homemade pudding was a disaster. I can't pipe frosting onto cupcakes for the life of me. Macarons were another one of those feared baking experiments. I've often seen the French cookie sandwiches in bakeries and cookbooks, but I've always heard horror stories about how difficult they were to make. Though I like a good challenge in the kitchen, macaroons were one I wasn't willing …

"University City Patch's" resident foodie shares the scoop on her latest conquest, the Meshuggah Café.
Meshuggah Café at 6269 Delmar Blvd. is a little unknown gem on U City’s loop. Of course, by unknown, I mean unknown to me. Upon entering on a late Sunday afternoon, it was clear that the café isn’t hurting for business. The place was full, most notably with students studying, reading, or tapping away on their laptops. Hipster is the best word I have to describe the atmosphere, but don’t let that deter you from paying the café a visit. After all, my husband and I are not hipsters, and we managed to feel right at home among the other patrons. The menu (unfortunately not currently available online) is rather basic, with a number of sandwiches and salads for lunch. Though we weren’t there for breakfast, I intend to return sometime and sample …

On Monday, we’ll be celebrating the independence of our country. For many this means a day off of work, taking in some fireworks, and attending or hosting a 4th of July barbecue. No plans yet? Why not host a 4th of July dessert party. The great thing about a dessert party is that the food can be made ahead of time, leaving you available to host instead of being stuck in the kitchen. Plus, it’s much less expensive than offering to cook a whole meal for your guests. Offer a few different desserts, some beverages, and kick back and enjoy the day with friends! Keeping in the spirit of the holiday, I want to offer some recipe suggestions that center around the three colors we associate with Independence Day: red, white, and blue. First up: …

As soon as warm weather hits St. Louis, it seems that University City comes alive. All of these people who have spent the winter hibernating, emerging only to get into a warm car, start to come out of the woodwork. People and their dogs are suddenly everywhere, kids start playing in their front yards, and, most noticeably, the smell of barbecue is in the air. I’m right there with everyone—we long for the first day we can grill out and suddenly many of our meals are both cooked and eaten outdoors! With Spring finally appearing, I know many people are firing up their grills. While you can’t ever go wrong with grilled chicken or a big hamburger, have you ever considered cooking pizza on the grill? A few years ago, my husband Ryan and I …

I agree, I wouldn't consider $8-10 for a sandwich "considerably" more than Snarf's. I just hope people patronize them enough to keep another restaurant going in that area of Delmar/North and South.   more ›
