Former Mets Player, UCHS Grad In Town Thursday

Art Shamsky will speak at the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival.

University City High School graduate and former New York Mets player Art Shamsky will be in St. Louis Thursday. Shamsky is speaking at the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Shamsky will discuss "Jewish Jocks" along with editor Franklin Foer. Shamsky played with the Mets from 1968-71. He also played for the Cincinnati Reds, the Oakland A's and Chicago Cubs.  "Jewish Jocks" is a collection of essays on significant Jewish athletes, coaches, team owners. In the book, New York Times writer David Brooks profiles Shamsky.  The event starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Jewish Community Center's Mirowitz Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 or free with the Jewish Book Festival's series plus ticket.

St. Louis Jewish Book Festival Starts Sunday

Carrie Fisher’s Nov. 4 keynote event kicks off an 11-day lineup of literary, media, business, sports and entertainment luminaries.

Award-winning actress and best-selling author Carrie Fisher kicks off the 34th annual St. Louis Jewish Book Festival with a keynote event at 7 p.m. Nov. 4, at the Jewish Community Center. The 11-day festival continues through Nov. 15. The daughter of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Fisher became a cultural icon portraying Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy. Her movie career also included roles in countless films such as: The Blues Brothers, Hannah and Her Sisters, and When Harry Met Sally.  Fisher’s first book, Postcards from the Edge, leapt onto the New York Times’ bestseller list and was followed by four more bestsellers, including her latest, Shockaholic. Fisher turned Postcards into a screenplay for the hit film starring…
