Smoking Ban in St. Louis County Casinos?

There's reportedly a push to make area casinos smoke-free and it could take a step closer to reality Tuesday.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis County Councilman Mike O’Mara plans to introduce legislation Tuesday to apply the St. Louis County smoking ban to county casinos. The article reports that O’Mara wants to remove all exemptions from the county's smoking ban, and that includes River City Casino and Hollywood Casino St. Louis. O'Mara cited the health issue of smoke and was also quoted making the following statement in the Post-Dispatch article. “My goal is to get this ordinance cleaned up so that everyone in the county is on a level playing field,” O’Mara, D-Florissant, said Friday. “I’ve heard from too many owners of bars and restaurants who have convinced me that it is unfair that some businesses have the exemption while …

Genes Predict if Medication Can Help You Quit Smoking

According to Washington University study.

The same gene variations that make it difficult to stop smoking also increase the likelihood that heavy smokers will respond to nicotine-replacement therapy and drugs that thwart cravings, a new study shows.  The research, led by investigators at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, appeared online May 30 in the American Journal of Psychiatry.  The study suggests it may one day be possible to predict which patients are most likely to benefit from drug treatments for nicotine addiction. “Smokers whose genetic makeup puts them at the greatest risk for heavy smoking, nicotine addiction and problems kicking the habit also appear to be the same people who respond most robustly to pharmacologic therapy for smoking cessation,” …

Smoking Porch to Open This Week at Blueberry Hill

Customers will be able to enjoy a smoke at Blueberry Hill starting this week.

Good news for smokers headed to Blueberry Hill. The restaurant's smoking section is expected to be open for business this week. The smoking porch is slated to open Monday, Tuesday at the absolute latest, according to the bartender. Blueberry Hill still has to install heaters in the enclosed smoking porch. The smoking section is located off the dart room. St. Louis County banned indoor smoking on Jan 2.

Ranoush Restaurant Opens New Lounge Location in the Loop for Hookah Smokers

The indoor smoking ban has put the kabash on hookah smoking inside the Ranoush Restaurant.

The days of enjoying a  hookah at Ranoush Restaurant at 6501 Delmar Blvd. are over, at least until the weather warms up. "Since that smoking ban we cannot do hookah inside anymore," said Mohammed Al Salem, manager of Ranoush, a middle eastern eatery in the Loop. "We only do it outside. But who wants to sit outside now," he said. The hookahs were only offered to diners after the kitchen closed, but still it violated the indoor smoking ban. To accommodate their hookah smoking customers, Ranoush has opened a new location down the street, between the Moonrise hotel and the Pageant, at 6165 Delmar Boulevard. It's called Ranoush Nights.  The place opened last week. Right now, it just has a paper sign on the door and window. Al Salem is hoping a …

Blueberry Hill Building New Smoking Section

Blueberry Hill has started construction on a new smoking lounge.

When bars and restaurants in University City have to go smoke free in the New Year, Blueberry Hill still wants to offer its customers a smoking section. Blueberry Hill has started construction on a new smoking lounge that will be separate from the inside of the building.  Owner Joe Edwards says a doorway off the dart room will take customers to a small smoking porch. He says the enclosed area will have a roof and a permanent mesh screen. As for Blueberry Hill's current smoking room, one of only two separately-ventilated smoking rooms in town. It didn't pass muster with the new law, so Edwards says he'll use that room for private parties. Voters passed the smoke free law over a year ago. As of midnight on January 2nd, smoking in all indoor…

I think business owners should have the right to choose to have a non-smoking establishment or a smoking establishment. People could then choose to go there or not, depending on their preference. Either way, I think a government ban violates their rights and freedom to run their business as they see fit. As for personally, I will be spending most of my money at those places that either qualified …   more ›
