Patch contributor Aja Owens loved last night's Lauryn Hill performance, even if she didn't always recognize all the songs Hill was singing.
After twelve long years, I could not wait to experience Ms. Lauryn Hill again in St. Louis. As a fan, I tried to be very hopeful that Ms. Hill would not only show up, but that she would show up and deliver a dynamic show for the crowd. A lot of patrons were doubtful that her show would be good due to poor reviews on this tour. In other cities, some condemned her for giving a sub par performance and others criticized her for being ridiculously late to her shows. The start time for the show at The Pageant continued to get pushed back, but I was not at all concerned with the time. Ms. Lauryn Hill hit the stage about midnight and in all honesty, the beginning of her show did not sit well with me at all. She took classic songs and recited …

With the New Year, comes a new opportunity to check out the interesting and diverse sounds offered by University City’s musical hotspots. Here is a preview of some of the interesting sounds for January.
January 7, 9pm Cicero's For roots music aficionados, Jake's Leg is a St. Louis institution. Over their thirty plus year career they have become more then a Grateful Dead cover band or a jam band. Instead, they have brought influences like Carlos Santana and Miles Davis into their sound resulting in a deeper, layered sound with plenty of groove to get down. Despite countless lineup changes the band retains its organic textures and continues to draw large crowds whenever they play. January 10, 17,24 9pm Cicero's Hank & the Truckers continue their Monday night residency at Cicero's throughout January. Billed on their Facebook page as "a weekly spectacle of rock & roll, honky-tonk, bluesy goodtimes." This four piece band is really a bar band …

Lauryn Hill's show time at The Pageant has been moved back to 9pm.
One thing seems for sure, fans attending Lauryn Hill's show at The Pageant later this month can expect it to be a late night. Doors will now open at 9pm for her show on Sunday, Jan. 16th. That's two hours later than originally scheduled. It's not uncommon for show times to be moved, however Hill's recent antics at a show in Brooklyn, New York, hopefully aren't a foreshadowing of things to come. The New York Times reports Hill took the stage four hours late for her show last Tuesday, making her entrance at midnight. She did apologize - sort of. The Times reports that when people in the audience started booing her, Hill said "I spent my entire 20s sacrificing my life to give you love. So when I hear people complain, I don't know what to …

After having attended hundreds of concerts in the 70s from MRFs to concerts on farms, in the woods, at lakes, Keil Auditorium, The American Theatre, Powell Hall, The Fox Theatre and more, there was only one incident where a performer was nearly 4 hours late. It was Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones at the Keil Opera House. We waited. It was worth the wait. Would I wait for Lauryn Hill? Not sure …   more ›
