St. Louis Zoo Names New Elephant: Meet Priya

The public has spoken. A naming contest selected the name Priya for the newest member of the Zoo's Asian elephant herd.

Raja's newest daughter, born April 26 at the St. Louis Zoo, finally has a name. Priya was named after a weeklong contest to pick among five names. The other options included Willow, Violet, Cai and Harper. According to the Zoo, there were 53,692 votes cast last week. Priya won out with 29.4 percent (15,777 votes) of the vote. The runners-up came in as follows: Ellie, one of the Zoo's Asian elephants, gave birth to a bouncing 250-pound baby girl at 10:57 p.m. Friday, April 26, according to the Zoo. Looking for a light display? Look no further. Winter Wonderland in Tilles Park Winter Wonderland runs from Nov. 21 to Jan. 1 and is closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. The park is open to both cars and carriages from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday but is closed to cars on Saturdays. Cost is $10 for a vehicle, $20 for a limousine, $40 for a commercial van and $90 for a tour bus. Cars must enter from southbound McKnight Road. Carriage rides are available every night. Advanced reservations are require for carriage rides. Ticket prices vary.
