Heavy Riff Brewing Company is the dream of two brothers.
Two brothers have pooled their talents, and are working to open Heavy Riff Brewing Company, at 6413 Clayton Avenue in Dogtown. The 4,000 square foot brew pub is east of the Hi-Pointe Theatre in an old grocery store. Jerid Safell, 31, worked for eight years for St. Louis University in medical purchasing. In the brewing business, he’s worked for six breweries and been head brewer, but didn't like someone telling him what to brew, and he didn't like that when he left he couldn't take his recipes with him. His brother Justin, 28, also had a corporate job. He brews too, but his talent is in running the business. He's a councilman in St. John, where they both live. “We started drinking beers one night, and said, why don’t we create an …

Josh Galliano is teaming up with a '95 Kirkwood High graduate who has worked in Chicago and New York.
Since Monarch closed in March 2012, acclaimed St. Louis chef Josh Galliano hasn't had a place to call his own. It's been announced, in STLtoday, that Galliano and husband-and-wife restaurateurs Nick and Audra Luedde will open the Libertine, in Clayton. They're calling the concept a "re-imagined neighborhood eatery," with small and large plates ranging from $6 to $22, backed by a wine, cocktail and craft beer program. Lease details are being finalized, but St. Louis Magazine's George Mahe reports the Libertine will be located at 7927 Forsyth Boulevard in Clayton, a space vacated last year by Chez Leon. Once open, Libertine will serve dinner daily, with lunch service coming later. The article states that Nick Luedde, 36, graduated from …

The suspected scammer has hit at least 10 restaurants in St. Louis, according to Mike Johnson, owner of Sugarfire Smoke House in Olivette. Johnson also owned Momo's in U City.
A one-man scam is suspected of hitting the Sugarfire Smoke House in Olivette, and according to owner Mike Johnson, the scammer is experienced. Johnson said the scammer has hit 10 other restaurants that Johnson knows of. Johnson previously owned a restaurant in University City. Johnson talked with the Riverfront Times, which reported the story on Monday. He said the scammer calls restaurants, says his order was mixed up and expects his money back. Johnson said he believed his story at first, but then talked to friends at other restaurants. “They said he’d gotten them too, so I just confronted him when he got here, and that was the end of it,” he said. It was almost the end of it. When the suspected scammer arrived at Sugarfire, Johnson …

University City Patch's resident foodie finally gives Fitz's in the Loop a try.
Whenever we head to the Loop in search of food, I always overlook Fitz’s (6605 Delmar Blvd). It’s not that I had heard negative things or that I have an aversion to root beer. Rather, I think of Fitz’s as a tourist stop and have always had the option of buying their premium sodas in the grocery story. That all changed last week, when I found myself in the Loop with my brother, who was craving a hamburger, and my husband, who wanted to sit outside. With a large patio and a menu featuring nearly a dozen different burgers, I could make two of my favorite men happy. Win and win. As enjoyable as it was to enjoy the summer-like weather sitting under an umbrella on the patio, I was tempted to take a seat indoors, where customers have a front row …

Group will ask the St. Louis County Council to eliminate smoking ban exemptions.
Tobacco-Free St. Louis will push the St. Louis County Council to expand the current smoking ban in the county to eliminate exemptions to the 2011 Clean Air Act. Businesses eligible for smoking bans include casinos, Lambert International Airport and bars where food makes up a small percentage of sales. The airport later went smoke-free despite its exempt status. The group made the announcement during a press conference Thursday morning at Three Kings Public House in University City. The group said there are currently 145 exemptions to the ban with the majority of those (56) coming in the North County area. There are 20 exemptions in mid-County, 41 in South County and 29 in the West County area. "The most vulnerable are the ones who are most…
