To see impact of new developments in the area.
The University City City Council approved a measure Monday directing City Manager Lehman Walker to see an RFQ (request for quotation) to do a comprehensive traffic and parking study in the Delmar Loop and surrounding neighborhoods. The idea was proposed by Councilman Michael Glickert and was approved 5-0. Mayor Shelley Welsch and Councilman Byron Price were not at Monday's meeting. Glickert said with the number of questions from residents regarding the Loop Trolley and it would fit with existing traffic and parking, he thought a study was in order. Councilman Stephen Kraft also noted the next step of the Parkview Gardens plan, which has not been implemented but looks at improvements in the area, was a traffic and parking study. "It seems …

A letter from the Loop Special Business District.
Please take just a moment to listen to the short audio clip that I have uploaded for your review. First, there was a new round in the continuing assault on the status of the free surface parking lot just north of Delmar (running between Kingsland and Leland). As you know, the Mayor and her allies want to develop garages and condominiums on the Lot. Now, because the LSBD seemed to have garnered some support for our position, Lynn Ricci, former Council Member, and ally of the Mayor and her administration, is attacking the Merchants and Property Owners (The Loop) as being a financial drain on the City and its resources. On Monday, July 9, 2012, she spoke at a Council Meeting (see a transcript of her statement to the Council below or …

Neighbors complain the driving range is too loud, an eyesore and that the lights are too bright.
The committee tasked with trying to resolve neighborhood complaints regarding the Ruth Park Driving Range voted on a handful of recommendations at Wednesday night's meeting. The recommendations will now go to City Manager Lehman Walker, who asked for the formation of the golf committee. Neighbors near the driving range complain that it's loud an eyesore and that the lights are too bright. One option nixed right away was turning off the range lights for good. "Could we add on to the list eliminating the (range) lighting altogether," asked board member William Field. "I don't think that's one that is going to go," said Ewald Winker, the Interim Director of the Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. "There are not enough votes to …

Several Loop business owners spoke out Monday night against a proposal to charge for evening parking in the Loop.
Several Loop business owners spoke in opposition to a proposal to charge for evening parking at Monday night's City Council meeting. "We are scraping by," said Kelly von Plonski, owner of Subterranean Books. "If people have to start to pay to park, fewer people will come to the Loop," she said. Von Plonski has been very public about her bookstore's struggle to stay open in these tough economic times. In February, she said if sales didn't start to turn around she would be out of business by September. Jessica Bueler, the owner of HSB Tobacconist located at 6363 Delmar and the newly elected President of the Loop Special Business District said free parking is one of the things that helped bring the Loop back. "It's not worth risking the …

Loop businesses say they will fight attempts by the City to charge for evening parking on City owned lots.
"Don't kill the goose that laid the golden egg," said Paul Schoomer, former owner of Paul's Books in the Loop, after learning University City's budget proposal for 2012 includes charging $1.00 for evening parking at two City owned lots which currently have no parking fees. The lots in question are the parking areas behind Cicero's that stretch to Market Pub House and to Starbucks, and the lot behind Fitz's. The City estimates charging a dollar for night parking would generate at least $210,000 a year. The business owners attending Tuesday's meeting of the Loop Special Business District said they will fight any effort by the City to impose evening parking fees on the two lots. "It's very, very important to have free parking," said Joe …

Chicago had the State Street Mall in the late 70s-90s. It did not work. It may have been a reason for the demise/relocation of several flagship retail giants. The streetscape returned to multimodal sometime in the last 20 years. I am a bike and pedestrian advocate, but the automobiles do have a place in the "market"   more ›
