University City Patch's resident foodie shares the scoop on her latest dining experience at Momo's Ouzario Taverna in University City.
Momo’s Ouzaria Taverna (located at 630 North and South) won my husband and I over on a recent Saturday night visit. Our experience exceeded our expectations, and given how busy it was, we don’t seem to be the only locals taking advantage of this great restaurant. The space is fairly large, but manages to feel cozy with its dim lighting, roaring fireplace, and closely situated tables. Upon entering, I immediately noticed the chalkboard near the bar boasting of their various Happy Hour specials, including half-priced spreads and $2 sangria. After making a mental note to myself to return between the hours of 4 and 7 during the week sometime, we were directed to our table and began to peruse the extensive menu. The menu primarily features …

University City Patch's resident foodie shares the scoop on her latest culinary experience, taking part in a Macaron Making Class in Clayton.
Before I began cooking regularly, everything in the kitchen intimidated me. I remember the first time I tackled yeast bread, something I'd long been afraid of. Then, there was my first layer cake. Despite a few lumps in the frosting, I put the cake together beautifully. Those were the successes! Then there are the things I have yet to tackle...my first attempt at homemade pudding was a disaster. I can't pipe frosting onto cupcakes for the life of me. Macarons were another one of those feared baking experiments. I've often seen the French cookie sandwiches in bakeries and cookbooks, but I've always heard horror stories about how difficult they were to make. Though I like a good challenge in the kitchen, macaroons were one I wasn't willing …

University City Patch's resident foodie Natalie McLaury shares the scoop on her latest dining experience at Kayak's Coffee.
While Kayak's Coffee, at the corner of Skinker and Forest Park Parkway is not in University City, it's still a go-to for many residents and a major hot-spot for Washington University students. Step inside Kayak’s Coffee (270 N. Skinker) and you might think you’ve stepped inside a lodge in the mountains of Colorado. With homey decorating and a dark wood interior, you almost forget that you’re inside a building located on a crowded corner. Having stopped in several times early in the day for breakfast, my husband Ryan and I were eager to try out their lunch and dinner menu. Kayak’s offers quite a variety, including many dishes with ingredients that aren’t found at your typical locale. I was intrigued by a number of their sandwiches, but in …

University City Patch's resident foodie shares the scoop on her latest dining experience from items she bought at Bob's Seafood in University City.
Having visited both the East and the West coast in the past year, my husband and I have been spoiled with good, fresh seafood. Though we like to go out for sushi occasionally while here in St. Louis, we don’t frequently make seafood at home. When we do, it’s typically frozen shrimp or tilapia. I’d heard of Bob’s Seafood in University City and passed it regularly on (8660) Olive Blvd., but have never stepped inside. With a major travel itch lately, I’m craving not only the sights, but also the eats of places far away from St. Louis. With no vacation to either coast on the agenda right now, I knew I’d have to get my fix elsewhere. Bob’s is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. When my husband and I stopped in on a Friday …

University City Patch's resident foodie shares the scoop on her latest dining experience from items she bought at the University City farmer's market.
The word pesto typically conjures up images of a bright green paste, known for its perfect marriage of basil, Parmesan, and nuts. The popular condiment is used as a pizza sauce, a sandwich spread, and much more. Today, I want to introduce you to another kind of pesto. This pesto is pink, not green, and a little sweet instead of cheesy. Basil is still a primary ingredient in this combination, but it’s the strawberries that steal the show! Unless you’re growing your own basil, it’s much cheaper to purchase it at U-City’s Long Acres farmer’s market as opposed to the grocery store. While you’re there, you may want to pick up a few other essential ingredients (namely strawberries, zucchini, and spinach) to make this healthy and fresh main dish…

June through August is my absolute favorite time to visit the University City's farmers market. Not only is my all-time favorite fruit, watermelon, bountiful, but there is also tons of produce in season, making food shopping all the more exciting! I have a bad habit of overbuying when I stop in—I’m easily drawn in by the array of colors and shapes. Soon, I’m daydreaming about all of the recipes I can make with fresh fruits and vegetables, and before I know it, I’m on my way home with several bags full. Does that happen to you, or do you have to force yourself to stock up on produce, only to let it go bad before you get a chance to eat it? Whether you’re already a healthy eater, or trying to straighten out your diet a bit, this dinner salad…

Ryan and I uncovered a gem of a restaurant in University City. Truth be told, it wasn’t a recent discovery. A year or two ago, we wandered into Pho Long, located at 8627 Olive Blvd, on a Saturday evening, glanced at the menu, and left after realizing there wasn’t much offered aside from pho, which neither of us were feeling that evening. It wasn’t until my lovely Patch editor Myra suggested I check out Pho Long that Ryan and I decided to pay the place another visit, this time to stay and eat! Immediately upon entering the small restaurant inconspicuously located in one of the many strip malls on Olive Boulevard, we noticed that the place had been redone. The entire restaurant had been repainted, redecorated, and rearranged since we last …

On Monday, we’ll be celebrating the independence of our country. For many this means a day off of work, taking in some fireworks, and attending or hosting a 4th of July barbecue. No plans yet? Why not host a 4th of July dessert party. The great thing about a dessert party is that the food can be made ahead of time, leaving you available to host instead of being stuck in the kitchen. Plus, it’s much less expensive than offering to cook a whole meal for your guests. Offer a few different desserts, some beverages, and kick back and enjoy the day with friends! Keeping in the spirit of the holiday, I want to offer some recipe suggestions that center around the three colors we associate with Independence Day: red, white, and blue. First up: …

As soon as warm weather hits St. Louis, it seems that University City comes alive. All of these people who have spent the winter hibernating, emerging only to get into a warm car, start to come out of the woodwork. People and their dogs are suddenly everywhere, kids start playing in their front yards, and, most noticeably, the smell of barbecue is in the air. I’m right there with everyone—we long for the first day we can grill out and suddenly many of our meals are both cooked and eaten outdoors! With Spring finally appearing, I know many people are firing up their grills. While you can’t ever go wrong with grilled chicken or a big hamburger, have you ever considered cooking pizza on the grill? A few years ago, my husband Ryan and I …
