U City By the Numbers: 2013 State of the City

Mayor Shelley Welsch and City Manager Lehman Walker gave an update on the city Tuesday.

Mayor Shelley Welsch told citizens Tuesday that University City is a "great community that has the potential to be greater still." Welsch and City Manager Lehman Walker spoke at the Historical Society of University City's 'State of the City' at University City City Hall.   Welsch updated residents on things going on in the city since her last State of the City, including the new developments going on. It seems all that matters to mayor welsch is " fiscal" stability and " business" successes.... Not one mention of school closings, a sharp rise in crime, and a drop inthe city's population ? No family is going to move into a town because of a stupid trolley or because a new bar/restaurant opens up... Not when there are no good schools to send their kids to, not when crime is a daily part of life…   more ›

2013 State of the City Address Is Tonight

The Historical Society of University City is hosting the free event.

Loop Trolley Moves One Step Closer to Reality

The U City Plan Commission approved a conditional use permit for the project Wednesday.

The University City Plan Commission Wednesday approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) on behalf of the Loop Trolley Company. The approval of the permit moves the project forward to a vote by the City Council Mayor Shelley Welsch, sitting in on the meeting for the absent Councilman Arthur Sharpe Jr., said the issue should be before the Council at its March 11 meeting. The CUP allows for the installation and operation of the proposed Loop Trolley in the CC – Core Commercial District and PA – Public Activity District Address/Location: Delmar Boulevard right-of-way from approximately Sgt. Mayor: Releasing Legal Documents Was an Error

The documents from the city's attorney were included in a University City Bulletin Board email newsletter.

Two weeks ago, the University City City Council debated whether Mayor Shelley Welsch violated Missouri's Sunshine Law by releasing documents from the city's attorney in her University City Bulletin Board email of Feb. 10. Monday night, Welsch apologized for the release, calling it an error. Welsch also included an apology in her Feb. 17 newsletter. Quoting from the Feb. 17 University City Bulletin Board newsletter: Last week in this newsletter I mentioned a legal opinion we had received from City Attorney Paul Martin concerning actions taken by a majority of the Council at a previous Council meeting which he indicated violated a State statute. Council Accuses Mayor of Releasing Confidential Documents

The legal opinions from the city's attorney were included in Sunday's University City Bulletin Board email newsletter.

A relatively quiet and quick-moving University City City Council meeting Monday came to a screeching halt as council members, the mayor, the city attorney and members of the audience debated whether Mayor Shelley Welsch violated Missouri's Sunshine Law in her University City Bulletin Board email Sunday night. In the weekly email news blast, the Mayor included information from City Attorney Paul Martin regarding a vote held at the last council meeting as well as the full text of Martin's legal opinion on the University City/Olivette intergovernmental meeting.  Councilwoman Paulette Carr, Ward 2, brought the issue up during council comments, which follow the majority of the council agenda.  Carr said she was "shocked and dismayed" to see the…

New Study of Mass Shootings by Mayors Against Illegal Guns Shows New Striking Trends

University City Mayor Shelley Welsch is a member of the organization.

A comprehensive study by Mayors Against Illegal Guns of mass shootings in the last four years has revealed new findings on trends in where mass shootings occur, what weapons are used, and what other factors are at play. The study identified 43 mass shootings where four or more people were murdered between January 2009 and January 2013. Wash U, Delmar Loop Redevelopment Ready to Break Ground

The $80 million project will create new living and retail space.

Washington University in St. Louis this week obtained final approval for the school’s $80 million student apartment and retail project in the Delmar Loop in University City and the city of St. Louis. The roughly 14-month construction phase is expected to begin next week as the project moves from plan to action. The venture is a strategic investment in the Loop and the surrounding communities through which the university aims to provide a model of sustainable urban living. Mayor Welsch Joins 29 Other Mayors in Response to Obama's Gun Plan

The University City mayor was one of 30 nationwide to issue statements Wednesday.

On Wednesday, President Barack Obama issued 23 executive actions and is urged Americans to put pressure on Congress to pass his proposed changes, including universal background checks on gun sales, a ban military-style assault rifles and limited ammunition magazines.
