U. City's Baseball Season Ends With Extra-Inning Playoff Loss At Ritenour

Lions enjoyed early 4-0 lead, but couldn't hang on in 7-6 10-inning loss to Huskies.

OVERLAND — It was a day of good and bad for the University City High boys baseball team. The Lions played a dynamite first few innings, and enjoyed a 4-0 lead Saturday morning, in their MSHSAA Class 4 District 5 playoff opener against host Ritenour High School. Unfortunately though, the bad was U. City couldn't hold onto that lead, nor could it maintain the 6-5 edge it had going into the final inning of regulation play, before eventually losing their first round playoff matchup to the Huskies, 7-6, in 10 innings. "It's disappointing," U. City baseball coach Rick Seim said. "We had our chances to win this game, and we just didn't capitalize. I thought we played a pretty good game against a pretty good team, we just didn't close it out when…

District Baseball Playoffs Begin This Weekend, U. City Seeded No. 5 In Class 4 District 5

Lions will begin district tournament with Saturday matchup against Ritenour, would face top-seed SLUH in semifinals on Monday.

The state high school baseball playoffs will kick up to full throttle this weekend, with games at locales all over the state. Some districts began play on Thursday, while some others will start up beginning Friday afternoon. For the youthful squad at University City, the action will begin on Saturday, with a matchup against Ritenour High of the Suburban North Conference. Both clubs have a similar makeup, with a lineup featuring a standout senior, surrounded by a number of younger players and underclassmen. Many believe the U. City at Ritenour showdown Saturday morning, could be the most intriguing matchup of the day, with the always dangerous Lions taking on the injury-striken Huskies. And that's despite neither club being picked to win a …

Suburban South: University City's Kevin Phillips Named Player of The Year

Lions junior catcher Kevin Phillips led the league in six different offensive categories.

Seckman and University City dominated the selections for the 2011 Suburban South all-conference team. It is no surprise that the Jaguars had more players (four) than any of the eight conference teams on the 13-player squad. Seckman not only won the league title, but did so without a loss in eight games. But University City, which won only a pair of league games, had three players selected, including the Player of the Year. Statistics play a big part in an all-conference selection and U. City led the league in scoring. Junior catcher Kevin Phillips was named the Player of the Year and rightly so, as he led the league in six different offensive categories. He led in batting average (.500), home runs (seven), runs scored (35), slugging …

Well deserved honors. The Lions games this season were always exciting. I'm hoping we can continue building strong baseball here again. That will require offering much more to younger players; our boys have always had to go to other communities to play, both pre-high-school and summer season. I understand there will be a baseball camp offering coming in July at Jack Buck field; when Patch gets …   more ›

Suburban South Roundup: Balber Set to Represent U. City at State Golf Meet

University City only had one sectional golf qualifier, but will still be represented at the state meet.

Our weekly look at the latest news and notes from the Suburban South Conference: University City may have had only one sectional golf qualifier, but the Lions will still be represented at the Class 3 state meet. Bryce Balber advanced to state after finishing 10th with an 83 (+12) at the Class 3 Sectional 2 Tournament, which was held at Aberdeen Golf Course in Eureka last Wednesday. Westminster Christian and Priory finished one-two in the sectional with Westminster's Kevin VandeKamp winning medalist honors with a two-over par 74. Several golfers from the conference earned spots in the state tournament at last week's Class 4 Sectional 1 meet at Westwood Hills Country Club in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Suburban South Roundup: Bats Going Cold For U. City

The Suburban South Conference baseball season has been wild, but U. City finds itself with a 2-1 league mark.

It has been a crazy season on the diamond for Suburban South Conference baseball teams. Not a single one of the eight teams in the league entered play this week with a winning overall record. Seckman and Parkway West, which play each other Thursday at Parkway West, share the conference lead with 2-0 marks. Seckman, which is 6-8 overall, did win a pair of games last week. The Jaguars used separate big innings for wins over Northwest and Webster Groves. Seckman had an eight-run fifth inning and a four-run seventh in a 12-5 nonconference win over Northwest on Wednesday. The Jaguars followed that with a four-run second inning in a 6-5 victory over Webster in a league game last Thursday. The Jaguars needed a run in the seventh inning to break a…
