I'm glad to be at Jackson Park." Shostak was the former principal of Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary, which was closed down after last school year. A fifth-grader named Phoebe said she's looking forward to seeing her friends. "I've been cooped up with my little sister all summer," she said as she stood next to her sister Lydia. Are you ready to start school? asked University City Patch. "Yeah!" said an excited second-grader named Neve. "Not really," her …

Fifth grader Francisco Mayo wins Jackson Park Spelling Bee

Jackson Park Elementary School's top 20 best spellers took the stage Tuesday for some tough word play.  Yearning and whittle sidelined two students in the first round. The word novice knocked out a novice speller. Oxygen also proved too tough for another student. The last two students standing were fifth-grader Francisco Mayo and sixth-grader Chris Swan. The two went back and forth until Swan was sidelined by the word succinct. Truth be told, I had to look it up to remember how to spell it myself. Mayo won the contest by correctly spelling monstrosity. The pair reach received a trophy, a gift card and a one-year subscription to Britannica Online for Kids.
