Habitat for Humanity Dedicates U City Homes

Five families received keys to their new houses on Thursday.

After months of planning and construction, five families got a new home to call their own on Thursday.  Habitat for Humanity dedicated its five newest homes Thursday at the build site at Bartmer and Kingsland in University City. The families will officially close on the homes Tuesday. The homes were built to LEED Platinum standards. Each home is a four bedroom, 1.5 bath, two story home.  These are the first Habitat homes in U City. Habitat St. Louis' CEO Kimberly McKinney previously told Patch there has been interest in the area for several years.  "For several years we followed the path of going into communities where we were the only act in town," she said. "Now we're working in communities where we are a part of the puzzle. Each new …

Habitat Homeowners: Lisa Jones

Lisa Jones, a student mother, is one of five families to buy a new home in U City with the help of Habitat for Humanity.

A student mother with two boys, Lisa Jones is about to become a first time homeowner. A medical secretary for St. Louis University’s pediatrics at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center, Jones looked for an area to live with a decent school district for her children. After encouragement from a friend, Jones applied for Habitat for Humanity. Within a month, she received approval for the last available home to be built in University City. Jones currently lives in a two-bedroom apartment with her sons, Nalin and Myles.  One of the most important things throughout the process, she said, is Habitat’s willingness to help. “It’s a humbling feeling,” Jones said. “It allows me to see there are people who do want the best for you.” Jones …

Habitat Homeowners: Treondus and Tyanna Sanderson

The Sanderson family will move into their dream home this Christmas.

A family of four will finally be able to have a house to call home this Christmas. Treondus and Tyanna Sanderson are moving from a one-bedroom apartment to a four-bedroom house in University City with the help of Habitat for Humanity. The Sanderson’s sons, Jayvionne and John, currently share the living room of their apartment as a bedroom. On Dec. 13, the boys will each have a room to himself for the first time. This is their first time buying a house and Tyanna Sanderson said the family is very excited. “That’s the best Christmas present ever,” Tyanna said. “It’s a blessing and the whole process step-by-step has been awesome and a blessing.”

Habitat Homeowners: Johanda Willis

A single mother of three becomes a first time homebuyer.

Johanda Willis is upgrading the living environment for her family this Christmas.  Willis graduated nursing school in May and said she wanted to find another area to live with her three children. Before moving into the home that she currently resides, Willis said she lived in a drug-infested community filled with crime. Though she does not live in that particular neighborhood anymore, her current home is not without flaws. The cost of living is challenging for her as a single mother and she struggles with issues like as water leaking into the home. Willis, her two daughters and her son have already started packing up to move into their new home. “We’ll be able to put up our first Christmas tree there,” she said. “Starting our journey as …

Habitat Raises the Roof in University City

Five roofs were placed on houses Monday.

Floating through the air with the greatest of ease, the roofs for new homes were lifted from their backyard resting place to their permanent home on top of the new Habitat for Humanity homes. Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity St. Louis put the roofs on the five homes currently under construction in University City. The roofs for each home were built on the ground and lifted via crane onto the structures.  Habitat first appeared in U City over a year ago, working with city planning officials. In addition to providing access to quality housing for low-income families, the residences will be setting a sustainable example by following LEED construction guidelines. The new homes are four bedroom, 1.5 bath, two story homes and are designed to…

Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build: Day 4

A look at the five new Habitat homes during the first week of construction.
