Middle East Protesters Gather in the Delmar Loop

Pro-Palestine protesters marched down Delmar Wednesday.

Pro-Palestinian protesters took to the streets in University City Wednesday, marching along Delmar Blvd. According to Fox2News, about 100 protesters marched along Delmar.  “Even though the cease-fire has taken place, the occupation continues of Palestinian land,” Banan Ead, member of the St. Louis Palestine Solidarity Committee, told Fox2News. Israeli native Daniel Iken came to the area to represent his side. “They’re not portraying the facts correctly. They’re putting a very extreme bias on it,” he told Fox2. “That side can’t understand that Israel is here to stay, Israel will exist, and to try to wish it away will not happen.” This is not the first time the Israel/Palestinian issue has touched the U City community. In July 2011, area …

Gaza Flotilla Stranded As Debate Maintains Course

Observers in Creve Coeur and University City weigh in on activist Hedy Epstein's participation in the Gaza flotilla.

A message on website for the group behind the Audacity of Hope indicates its flotilla participants, including St. Louis area activist Hedy Epstein, are leaving Greece. The July 6 update reads in part: "Our folks are beginning the journey home – some will arrive today, some tomorrow and others in the days ahead. Everyone is tired, but their energy is strong!" As University City Patch first reported on July 1, Epstein, an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor, joined the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II to protest Israel’s naval blockade of the area. The Greek coast guard prevented the flotilla from departing, and authorities arrested the captain of the U.S. boat Audacity of Hope. The captain was released Tuesday.  As other flotilla participants wait to …

Holocaust Survivor Sails to the Gaza Strip

Hedy Epstein of St. Louis will be part of a group of boats sailing in protest of the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

Hedy Epstein, an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor, is having trouble packing her luggage. First, she packed too many clothes to fit in her suitcase, but then again she doesn't know for how long she will leave. Epstein has traveled several times throughout her life, first from Germany, escaping Adolf Hitler, to England. Then to New York and eventually St. Louis. This time, she is trying to travel light, for a boat trip to the Gaza Strip. Epstein of St. Louis is one of 34 American passengers aboard the Audacity of Hope, as part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II that will be traveling to the Gaza Strip this week in protest of Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.  In an article about the 2011 flotilla, The New York Times reported on the …

It is Palestinians, not Israel that uses Nazi-like methods. Palestinians target innocent civilians, murdering them for no other reason than that they are Jew, just as the Nazis did. Palestinians, not Israelis, target children and women and attack civilians to create maximum carnage. At the height of the Palestinian terrorist campaign in the early 2000s, they attacked an ice cream parlor, a …   more ›

Hedy Epstein: “Our Spirits Are High. I'm Calm, Unafraid, Hopeful.”

"University City Patch" is following the journey of the 86-year-old woman who is part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II.

At the end of June, Hedy Epstein of St. Louis left for Greece to join fellow activists as part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla II. Epstein, an 86-year-old Holocaust survivor, and 36 other Americans were aboard the Audacity of Hope. The vessel was scheduled to depart sometime this weekend along with other boats. The flotilla’s goal was to break Israel’s sea-blockade of Gaza. University City Patch published a profile of Epstein on Friday.  No smooth sailing According to a Huffington Post article also published that day, Greek authorities prevented the flotilla from sailing to Gaza. The American vessel had already left by the time Greece froze the other departures. The Greek coast guard surrounded the Audacity of Hope and escorted it back to …

StandWithUs, a ten year-old internaitonal Israel education organization, commends Greece and the international community for effectively discrediting and disabling Flotilla 2. They upheld Israel’s right to maintain its naval blockade of Gaza, and refuted false claims about conditions in Gaza. “Fortunately, Greece and other international leaders are treating this flotilla for what it is: a …   more ›
