Fire Damaged House of India to Reopen March 22

The University City restaurant was damaged in a fire this week.

A sign on the door of fire-damaged House of India reports that the restaurant plans to reopen on Friday, March 22. Patrons should check the House of India web site for updates on the reopening. The University City favorite was damaged in the early morning hours of Friday, March 15, when fire broke out in the kitchen.  Fox 2 reports the fire started around 12:15 a.m. at the restaurant at Delmar Blvd. and Berick Drive. Fire Damages House of India Overnight

Fox 2 reports the fire started around 12:15 a.m.

Fire damaged the House of India in University City early Friday morning. The owners rushed to the scene to see the damage first-hand. Fox 2 reports the fire started around 12:15 a.m. at the restaurant at Delmar Blvd. and Berick Drive. The University City fire department got a call that smoke was coming from the roof. Crews found the fire in the kitchen. They were able to keep the fire to the kitchen and put it out in less than 45 minutes. The restaurant has been open for more than 20 years. The door is now boarded and the building has been condemned, Fox 2 reports. There were no injuries.

Update: Fire at Washington University Dorm

No injuries were reported in the fire that occurred early Friday afternoon on the campus of Washington University.

Update: 1:45 p.m. All traffic lanes have been reopened. Our original story: Northbound traffic is temporarily stalled between Wydown and Forsyth boulevards on Big Bend Boulevard following a brief fire on the campus of Washington University. Construction materials caught fire early Friday afternoon outside of Wheeler Hall dorm while workers were welding pipes, said G. Mark Thorp, chief of the Clayton Fire Department. "They were replacing insulated piping," Thorp said. The dorm was vacant.  Thorp said Clayton and University City responded around 12 p.m. Laclede Gas had a crew in the area which responded when it heard the call, but no gas lines were involved.  The fire lasted less than 20 minutes. UPDATE: Loop Clothing Store Sustains Heavy Smoke Damage in Apparent Electrical Fire

University City Fire Chief Don Miner says the fire appears to be "electrical in nature." One witness says "It was bad."

It appears an electrical fire is to blame for damaging a clothing store in the Delmar Loop Wednesday afternoon.  No one was hurt in the fire. Around 3:15 p.m. fire crews from University City, St. Louis City and Mid-County responded to the fire at Timeless Authentic Garments (Tag) at 6314 Delmar Blvd. The store is located between Noodles and Company and Chipotle Mexican Grill. Miner said those businesses sustained moderate smoke damage. University City Fire Chief Don Miner told University City Patch that the fire, "looks like it was electrical in nature." Fire at Loop Clothing Store Shuts Down Delmar

The University City Fire Department responded to a fire at Timeless Authentic Garments around 3:15pm on Wednesday.

A fire broke out at a store in the Delmar Loop area around 3:15pm Wednesday. Witnesses report seeing smoke pouring out of the front door of Timeless Authentic Garments, located at 6314 Delmar. The shop is described as a used, vintage, consignment store. The store is located between Chipotle and Noodles and Company. Employees at Noodles and Company rushed to help with buckets of water, but say the smoke was too thick to get inside the store. University City Fire Chief Don Miner says it appears to be an electrical fire that started in a rear room in the store. He says the business sustained heavy smoke damage. University City Rethinking Use of Delmar Firehouse as Police Station

City Manager Lehman Walker says the firehouse in Delmar has obvious structural problems and it makes no sense to move police into the building as fire officials move out.

University City is rethinking plans that would see the police department occupy the fire station behind City Hall once the fire department moves to a new location. City Manager Lehman Walker told University City Patch, "there are obvious structural problems with the building that the fire department currently occupies, which is why we are proposing to build a new fire station." It was proposed that the police department takeover the fire station at 6801 Delmar, but Walker said it doesn't make sense to move the police into a facility that is unsafe.
