UNC's Holden Thorp Named New Provost at Wash U

Thorp will succeed Edward Macias, who held the provost and executive vice chancellor position at Washington University for 25 years.

Washington University in St. Louis named Holden Thorp of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill as the university's new provost. Thorp, 48, will begin his tenure after he completes his term at UNC on June 30. The provost position is Wash U's chief academic officer. Thorp will succeed Edward Macias, who has been the provost at Washington University for 25 years. Macias joined the University in 1970 and is retiring this year. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Chancellor Mark Wrighton said Thorp’s track record as an academic, researcher and administrator prompted him to recommend him to the committee seeking Macias’ replacement. “He is among the most respected educators in higher education,” Wrighton told the Post. “In Holden, …

Washington University Provost to Retire in 2013

Edward Macias will leave the school after the 2012-13 school year.

Washington University's provost will retire at the end of current academic year, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. According to the Post, Edward Macias will end his 25 year tenure on June 30, 2013. He was first named provost in 1988 and became the executive vice chancellor and dean of Arts & Sciences in 1995. In 2009, Macias was again named provost or chief academic officer, while continuing his job as executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. Macias joined the university in 1970 and has been a professor, chair of the chemistry department and director of summer school during his time at Wash U.  The school said it will conduct a national search for his replacement.
