Raushona JenkinsHarris has a motto: “Why envy me, when they can envy you?” Her envious sense of fashion style, combined with her nickname –NV—led her to open NVme Boutique in University City.
Raushona JenkinsHarris always wanted to open a clothing store. "Since I was a little girl, I just shopped, shopped, shopped," she said. “People would say, 'I envy you! I love those shoes,'” and ask her where she found her great clothes." JenkinsHarris now shares her fashion sense through her boutique, NVme Boutique on 7809 Olive Blvd. Her store carries women’s fashions, handbags, accessories and shoes. She also has a custom line of potpourri, scented oils and Shea butter lotions that she creates herself. None of her clothing is priced over $60 and the priciest item in the shop are her travel bags, marked at $150. NVme Boutique on 7809 Olive Blvd will soon be moving to a larger space in the new Gotham Annex on Delmar and will be adding men’s fashion to the mix.
NVme Boutique carries women’s fashions, handbags, accessories and shoes. Owner Raushona JenkinsHarris also sells a custom line of potpourri, scented oils and Shea butter lotions that she creates herself. The boutique will be closing Feb. 13 as JenkinsHarris prepares to move the store to a new shopping plaza, Gotham Annex, on Delmar and Hamilton. She said the new location will have 2,400 square-feet, more than twice the size of her current shop. You can’t buy Devil City’s baboon, but you can buy American made retro and rockabilly clothes.
It’s hard to walk past a rockabilly clad mannequin holding a taxidermied baboon on a leash. Inside Devil City, the Delmar Loop’s newest eclectic apparel shop located at 6301 Delmar, a two headed calf watches over the dressing rooms while a mounted zebra head guards the fedoras. Skulls share space with cheerful vintage advertisements. The antique wood dressing room doors were once the lavatory doors at the old St. Louis library while everything from a wooden carousel panel to old oil cans cover the rest of the walls. None of that is for sale, though that doesn’t stop people from trying. Deborah Fink, the store owner, said every week she gets at least 3 offers for the baboon in the window. “I tell them $2000.
