City Council Takes Up Issue of Changing U City's Ward Boundaries

The City Council will hold a public hearing during Monday's council meeting to talk about changing the boundaries of University City’s three wards.

The boundaries of University City's three wards could soon be changing. This past Tuesday a city council subcommittee met to talk about redrawing the ward lines to reflect population changes highlighted in the 2010 Census. On Monday, the city council will hold a public hearing to discuss the matter. "We are losing our population, this is not anything that any of you don't know," said University City Community Development Director Andrea Riganti said to the subcommittee. "We did in 2005 predict a decline of population." According to the 2010 Census, the University City's population stands around 35,000, down from nearly 37,500 in 2000. "There is a slight disparity amongst the three wards," Riganti said. Ward 2 has the fewest amount of …

City Council Approves Grant for Police Equipment; Votes to Dissolve Olive TIF Commission

The City Council of University City votes to pursue grant that will pay for new guns and vests for police officers.

Monday night the city council voted to postpone taking action on Bill 9115 (listed below) that deals with compensation paid to city officials and employees of University City.   Ward 3 Councilmember Byron Price said he wanted more information on the bill. City Manager Lehman Walker said he would provide that to Councilmember Price. The council approved the city's application for a grant to purchase equipment for the police department. The University City Police Department will buy 12 tactical rifles and six ballistic vests for a total of $24,000. The amount will be covered by the grant, which requires no matching funds. The council also voted to approve Bill 9119, which dissolves the Olive Boulevard Central Tax Increment Financing …

So what IS the plan for redeveloping Olive? It was my understanding that the businesses/apartment buildings were bought and razed to create larger tracts to attract new development (which is much needed.) Is the city actively seeking developers or do they intend to let the lots sit idle indefinitely?   more ›

City Council Approves Two Ordinances in Special Session Tuesday

The easements allow MSD and Ameren to work in areas involving their equipment in Flynn Park.

In a special session on Tuesday, the City Council unanimously approved two ordinances involving access to Flynn Park. The meeting, which got under way at 5 p.m., lasted 7 minutes. The Ameren easement concerns two utility poles in Flynn Park. "They never had an easement for them, and now they have to run a new wire on those poles," said Ewald Winker, interim director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry told University City Patch. "It means they have the right to come on and work there," Winker said. "They don't have to knock on your door and say 'Hey, we're going to be in your backyard."' The MSD easement involves bioretention or a rain garden to catch storm water for both the new school addition at Flynn Park School and the nearby city …

Traffic Commission Discussion Centers on Traffic Restrictions

Commission Members also discussed rules of order and procedure.

The hour-long meeting of the Traffic Commission Wednesday night at City Hall had two major discussions: the rules of order and procedure of the commission and citizen petitions of traffic flow restrictions on Quendo and Teasdale avenues. After approving the minutes from the April 13, 2011 meeting, the commission discussed the rules of order and procedure of the commission. The discussion was an opportunity for commission members to have their comments incorporated into the procedure of the commission. Sharon Logan, a resident of 1300 block of Waldron petitioned the commission to have a “No Thru Traffic to Midland Blvd.,” sign to be placed facing north at the intersection of Quendo and Canton avenues. “This request is to attend to the …
