Posting an armed officer in every School District of University City school and in schools across the country is the goal of the National Rifle Association (NRA), the guns-rights lobby announced on Friday. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," said Wayne LaPierre, the organization's top lobbyist, at a Friday news conference, according to a Huffington Post report. The statement comes on the heels of the tragic school shooting in Newtown, CT, where 20 children and six adults were killed. Four more cameras will be added to the system already in place in the Delmar Loop.
The University City City Council Monday approved the purchase of four additional security cameras for the system in the Delmar Loop. The project came in under budget at about $35,000, according to KMOX, when it was projected to be closer to $40,000. Mayor Shelley Welsch abstained from the vote. The new cameras are to be added to one already in operation on the city's multi-level Loop parking garage. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch quotes a memo from U City Police Chief Charles Adams, saying the cameras will provide enhanced electronic surveillance of street-level activity along Delmar Boulevard. One man is in custody after 12:30 p.m. shooting.
A teenager was shot in the head Tuesday afternoon, allegedly by a man in a wheelchair. Police Captain Michael Ransom said it happened about 12:30 Tuesday afternoon, on Ahern, just west of Hanley. The teen, who was originally reported to be a University City High School student, was later found to not even be a U City resident. Police believe the incident occurred during a drug deal, and that both the victim and the suspect were armed. Fox2News reports that the victim is between the ages of 16-17 and is fighting for his life at an area hospital.
