Senior running back David Carmichael had a career night, with four touchdowns in the first half, and another in the second, as U. City dismantled top-seed St. Charles West. The Lions will play Clayton for the District Championship on Monday.
ST. CHARLES -- University City High senior running back David Carmichael doesn't mind too much that his remarkable 2012 season has gone vastly unnoticed by most fans and experts who the local high school football scene. Carmichael has been one of the best players in what might be the best football conference in the state this year. Yet hardly anyone had noticed. That is until Wednesday night, when the U. City rushing dynamo announced himself to the local high school football world, with an all-world performance—159 yards and five touchdowns—to lead the Lions to a 42-0 upset win over top-seeded St. Charles West at Steve Stahl Stadium in St. Charles. "I try," Carmichael said, after leading U. City to an astonishing blowout win over the GAC …

Senior quarterback DeAndre Williams drives the Lions 77 yards in the last 90 seconds, but U. City loses, 34-30, to Seckman.
Seckman needed a big play from its defense as it trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter of a game that saw the Jaguars and University City trade scores over eight straight possessions. The Seckman defense then quickly got a quarter’s worth of big plays. The Jags defense caused three turnovers, including a recovered fumble early in the fourth to set up the go-ahead score, and eventually stopped U. City three yards short of the end zone as time expired to preserve a 34-30 Suburban South Conference victory on Saturday afternoon and spoil the Lions’ homecoming celebration. “They really responded,” Seckman coach Jamie Critchlow said. “Of course, they gave up a few big plays in there, but they got a turnover the series before to …

Quarterback DeAndre Williams makes big plays with his arm and his legs, as U. City gets its first win in 2011.
UNIVERSITY CITY–After two weeks of intermittent great plays one moment and poor throws and decisions the next, University City quarterback DeAndre Williams decided it was time to put it all together and show off the total package. And boy, what a show he put on Friday afternoon at Muhl-Schemmer Stadium, when he threw three touchdown passes, ran for a fourth, and made all the key plays in the fourth quarter to lead U. City to a thrilling 25-20 win over Suburban South Conference rival Parkway North. “I’ve always thought that at critical times, you give the ball to your best player,” U. City head coach Carl Reed said. “If I’m going down, I’m going down with the ball in DeAndre Williams’ hands.” And Reed made sure to go all in with Williams, …

Webster Groves' linemen dominate University City, and its strong passing game helps to trample the Lions.
When half the stadium lights went out early in the second quarter of Friday night's game between University City and Webster, it gave the Lions a brief chance to escape the pain of a bruising Statesmen offensive attack. Webster already was up, 16-0, in the Suburban South Conference matchup. But the respite was short-lived, and the Statesmen continued to roll through the first half, racking up a big enough lead for Webster coach Cliff Ice to pull his starters for the second half. "We dominated the line up front, on both sides of the ball. The line won the game for us," said Ice. Senior Statesmen quarterback Rayshawn Simmons took full advantage of his offensive line's dominant performance, completing 13-of-16 passes for 219 yards as the home…

Teams total more than 900 yards of total offense, and combine for 11 touchdowns in high-scoring Suburban South Conference affair.
If the first play of the season can be used as any kind of indicator, then the 2011 varsity football campaign is going to mighty exciting for the Parkway West Longhorns. That’s certainly the impression West made during Friday’s season opener at University City High’s Muhl-Schemmer Stadium, when junior Ryan DeMuri ran back the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, that sparked the Longhorns to a 47-33 win over the host Lions. “It does relax you (when you score on the opening kickoff),” West head coach Jeff Duncan said. “But we told our kids, the game’s far from over. (University City) came back on us a little bit. But it was a big play. We’ll take those any time we can get them.” DeMuri’s brilliant return was only the first of several …

New Lions head coach Carl Reed hopes he can guide his team toward improvement after a 1-9 season in 2010.
New University City football coach Carl Reed has simple and straightforward goals for the 2011 campaign. “We want to try and be competitive in every game,” Reed said. Reed, 30, has solid roots in St. Louis-area football, as he played for Hazelwood Central. After graduating from high school in 1999, Reed continued his career with Austin Peay State University, a Division I school in Clarksville, Tenn. Reed was hired late in March to replace Rob Battle, who coached the Lions to a very disappointing 1-9 record in 2010. Battle was preceded by Duane Hawthorne, who led the Lions to four solid seasons from 2006-2009. Hawthorne, who led U. City to a 6-6 mark in 2009, is currently preparing for his first season at Hazelwood West. Reed started his …

New University City football coach Carl Reed will be looking to install more of a passing-oriented attack this fall.
A 7-on-7 football tournament is the perfect opportunity to showcase the quarterbacks. It can also be a good testing ground for new coaches. There were plenty of each on display Saturday at De Smet Jesuit High School. The St. Louis Metropolitan Football Coaches Association held its inaugural 7-on-7 tourney at De Smet with 23 teams from Missouri and Illinois participating. Top area quarterbacks like Dalton Demos of Christian Brothers College, Gateway Tech’s Paul Rice, Ladue’s Brandon Carr, De Smet’s Conner Harrison, Fort Zumwalt West’s Drew Hare and Lindbergh’s Peter Simpson all aired it out without having to worry about getting hit by an oncoming rush. The tournament was two-hand touch, played without pads and had no rushing attempts. “The …
