U City Schools to host MoCHIP This Saturday

The child identification program provides free information to parents.

The School District of University City will host the Missouri Child Identification and Protection Program (MoCHIP) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 in the Brittany Woods Middle School library, located at 8125 Groby Road in University City.  MoCHIP is sponsored by the Masonic Children’s Foundation and provides free child identification badges and a CD that includes personal information data, fingerprints, DNA and dental impressions. Height charts and scales at the event facilitate the most current details regarding the child. Children are asked to not eat immediately prior to and during processing to allow for a clean DNA swab. Slow, Steady Riders Bike from U City to Olivette

Trailnet will lead the ride from Brittany Woods Middle School each Tuesday and Thursday.

Trailnet is hosting a new free "slow and steady" group bike ride, led by a Trailnet volunteer, for beginning cyclists and slower riders of all ages, including seniors and children accompanied by an adult. This ride meets at 6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, May through June, at the C. Edwin Murray Prairie parking lot next to Brittany Woods Middle School. Enjoy a few minutes of stretching then ride a combination of dedicated bike routes on quiet roads and a paved bike/pedestrian trail to Stacy Park in Olivette.  The no-drop ride returns on the same route. The total distance is six miles with optional extensions on your own to Heman Park, Shaw Park and others. Brittany Woods Students Aim to Change Perception of Teens in the Loop

Members of the Teen Outreach program were advocating for good causes Thursday.

Students in Wyman’s Teen Outreach Program (TOP) at Brittany Woods Middle School took their latest community service project to the streets of the Loop Thursday. This group of seventh grade students decided that they wanted to change the public perception of teens in the Delmar Loop. The students in Wyman’s TOP stood in front of four storefronts in the Loop, advocating for causes the stores find important. The following topics were advocated: Wyman’s TOP program is used by schools, communities and youth practitioners to empower teens to lead successful lives and build strong communities. TOP is a nationally recognized program that delivers real results. Young people who take part in TOP have a 60 percent lower risk of school dropout, a 53 …

A 'Smashing' Show: Guys & Dolls at Brittany Woods

Tickets remain for shows tonight, Saturday at Brittany Woods Elementary School.

After months of hard work the actors at Brittany Woods Middle School brought down the house Thursday night with a pitch-perfect performance of Guys and Dolls Jr. There are two more chances to see the show: tonight at 7 p.m. and Saturdayat 2 p.m. in the Little Theater at Brittany Woods Middle School. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at Brittany Woods Middle School office. They will not be available at the door. Brittany Woods was one of 20 schools nationwide to be selected to participate in NBC’s SMASH Make a Musical Project. Brittany Woods Principal Named Middle School Principal of the Year 


Award comes from the St. Louis Association of Secondary School Principals.

Jamie Jordan has been named 2012 Middle School Principal of the Year by the St. Louis Association of Secondary School Principals (SASSP). Dr. Jordan has been principal of Brittany Woods Middle School in University City since 2009. “I’m honored by this award, but it wouldn’t be possible without the great team of assistant principals, teachers, support staff and volunteers who work together to make Brittany Woods Middle School a great place for students each and every day,” said Jordan. Prior to coming to University City, Dr. Jordan served as an assistant principal in the Rockwood School District. She began her career teaching social studies at Lindbergh High School and later advanced to serve as the school’s Social Science Department …

C. Edwin Murray Prairie Dedication Is Saturday

Prairie is next to Brittany Woods Middle School

The School District of University City and the Green Center will dedicate the Brittany Woods C. Edwin Murray Prairie in honor of the late Ed Murray on Saturday. The event will be at 1 p.m. at the Outdoor Classroom Prairie Space west of Brittany Woods Middle School. In the 1970s, the space occupied by the prairie was a barren field. Science teacher Edwin "Ed" Murray recommended the space be transformed to a place of learning for students. Through the support of Washington University and partnership with the Green Center, the prairie became a teaching tool that showcases native plants and attracts wildlife. Murray lived most of his life in University City and was a student at Pershing Elementary, Ward Junior High School and University City …

Prairie to Be Named for Long-Time Science Teacher

School board to name prairie at Brittany Woods Middle School for C. Edwin Murray.

The School District of University City Thursday dedicated the outdoor classroom at Brittany Woods Middle School to longtime science teacher C. Edwin Murray. In a resolution passed unanimously by the school board, the district dedicated the prairie, wetlands and woodlands used as an outdoor classroom for students. The classroom is used in conjunction with The Green Center. The resolution reads: In the 1970s, the space currently occupied by the prairie was a barren field. Science teacher Edwin "Ed" Murray recommended that the space be transformed into a place of learning for students.
