School District of University City students went back to school last week, which means it’s time for an abundance of expensive school supplies, backpacks full of complicated text books and dreaded questions about math homework. With back-to-school stresses piling up, Laura Overdeck wants to let children and parents in on a little secret: math can be fun. Really.  Overdeck is on a mission to change the way Americans think about math — especially given that math anxiety has been tracked in kids as young as age 5. Jim McLeod Memorial to Honor Washington University Leader

Before his death in September, he served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest undergraduate school at WUSTL. His accomplishments include expanding the study-abroad program and improving dormitory living, the university reported.

Legendary Washington University in St. Louis administrator Jim McLeod will be commemorated in Clayton beginning Sept. 15 when a new nature space dedicated to his memory is unveiled, the university reported this week.  McLeod served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the largest undergraduate school at WUSTL. He died last September. Police Add Patrols Around St. Louis County Schools

With students back in school, St. Louis County police are adding patrols around schools and bus stops.

The St. Louis County Police Department issued the details of the increased patrols in a news release Friday.  Authorities stated that patrols will be increased in areas around schools, bus stops and in speed zones. Officers will also be watching for drivers not obeying the stop arms on buses. Police stated that it's all part of the St. Louis County Police Department's Back to School Enforcement Program which focuses on the safety of students. The following information was included in the news release. "This program is designed to provide extra visibility and enforcement, especially in our neighborhoods and around school buildings," noted Chief of Police Tim Fitch. It's Back to School Tomorrow for U City Students

School District of University City classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 22.

It's hard to believe but summer vacation ends today for students in the School District of University City. Classes for the 2012-13 school year start tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 22.  Flynn Park Elementary will hold a "Meet the Teacher" night from 4-5 p.m. tonight.  Patch has all of your need to know information for the first day of school, from start times to bus routes and supply lists for each building.  Check out how school supply prices compared at Target and Wal-Mart, courtesy of Maplewood-Brentwood Patch.

Jackson Park's Popsicles with Principal Is a Hit

Crowds turned out Thursday for an afternoon of popsicles before school starts.

Jackson Park Elementary held its second 'sweet and greet' on Thursday for parents and students to get to know each other and Principal Elliott Shostak. Parents and students were treated to popsicles in front of the school with the building's administration. They also were allowed to check out the building Classes in the School District of University City start Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Public transportation in the form of MetroBus and MetroLink is available to students from various locations near the WUSTL campus. Bus schedules, bus routes and many other tools are available online.

Students at Washington University in St. Louis can use a variety of online tools to identify MetroBus schedules and bus routes, and to find MetroLink stops near the Danforth Campus and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Here's a look at some of them.
