Lions rally from eight points down in fourth quarter to claim first boys basketball district championship in 26 years, thanks to Travon Williams’ dramatic last-second, game-winning shot.
LADUE – With just 5.9 seconds left in Friday night’s MSHSAA Class 4 District 6 game against No. 1 seed Westminster Christian Academy, and his team trailing 72-70, every single person in MICDS High School’s McDonnell Gymnasium knew that University City senior Travon Williams was going to take the last shot for Lions. Westminster Christian knew Williams was going to take the last shot, and that’s why they put two people on him, and tried to do everything it could to make him pass the ball. But nothing was going to stop U. City’s No. 1 scoring machine, who raced downcourt against double-coverage, somehow found an open area to get a shot off, and drained a dramatic three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to lift U. City to an incredible 73-72 win…

Misplays in final minutes too much to overcome as Lions lose 70-65 to visiting Falcons.
UNIVERSITY CITY HIGH SCHOOL – The best way to characterize Friday night’s critical Suburban South Conference boys basketball game at the Ed Crenshaw Gymnasium between visiting Rockwood Summit and homestanding University City, might be to call it a tale of three ballgames. First, there was the opening quarter, when Summit dominated the action and nearly ran U. City off the floor. Then there was the second quarter, when U. City was so good on offense and defense that Summit could barely get a shot off, let alone score. And then there was the fourth quarter, when despite the previous huge swings in momentum, both clubs played sensational basketball and took turns putting themselves in position to win. Unfortunately for the home team, it was …

Travon Williams’ game-high 24 points, along with Alex Henry’s clutch 18 points save U. City from lackluster start after 13-day layoff.
BALLWIN – University City High boys basketball coach David Gammon admits he was a bit concerned about how his team would fare on Wednesday night, in its first actual game since competing in the Meramec Holiday Basketball Festival nearly two weeks ago. Gammon made sure to put the Lions through a number of tough practices during the layoff. But there’s nothing like actual game action, and the U. City coach was hopeful that his squad wouldn’t be so rusty that it cost them a win. “They have been practicing so hard,” Gammon said. “I’ve never had to tell a team in 13 years to back off al little bit. But that’s how hard they’ve been practicing. But even as hard as they’ve been practicing, sometimes it’s hard to come out and do it in a game when …

Lions knock off No. 6-ranked Marquette on last second shot by football star Alex Henry, advances to play rival Webster in second round on Wednesday.
KIRKWOOD -- With the game on the line and the clock running down against No. 6-ranked Marquette High Tuesday night in a first-round game at the prestigious Meramec Holiday Basketball Tournament, University City boys basketball coach David Gammon wasn’t sure what, if anything, his team was going to do to win the game. The coach had called a play, but with the Lions down a point and less than 30 seconds left in overtime, Gammon could see his team was a little anxious. And he wasn’t sure if his squad would run the play or not. “I was sitting there thinking, ‘what are we going to do here?’” Gammon said. “Then he took the shot, and I thought, ‘oh, that’s what we're going to do.’” The ‘he’ in question, was U. City senior Alex Henry, a kid who …

Joe Schenk's 1-yard touchdown catch with 11 seconds left lifts Summit to win over U. City
FENTON -- After giving up the go-ahead touchdown with 1:12 left in an important Suburban South Conference game, the Summit Falcons drove the length of the field, and scored a touchdown of their own with 11 seconds left, to claim a 17-12 victory over visiting University City, Thursday night at Summit High's Falcon Stadium. Quarterback Tyler Karst won the game for Summit, with a 1-yard touchdown pass to wideout Joey Schenk on a quick fade pass that lifted the Falcons to a win that didn't seem possible after U. City had scored just a minute earlier to take its first lead of the night. The visiting Lions grabbed the lead when DeAndre Williams hit Alex Henry for a 12-yard score that beat double-coverage, and gave U. City a 12-10 late in the …

It will be homecoming for the Lions when they host Seckman in a Suburban South Conference game.
The University City football team has few secrets. “People know we can score the football, but people know we've had trouble stopping people from scoring,” U City coach Carl Reed said. “This week we're hoping to get a little defensive intensity and try to slow down the other team a little bit.” The Lions (1-3, 1-3) will host Seckman (1-2, 1-2) for their homecoming game at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in a Suburban South Conference game. The Lions are averaging more than three touchdowns per game behind senior quarterback DeAndre Williams, who has two games with over 300 yards passing. Williams, whose favorite target is senior receiver Alex Henry, is also capable of successfully running the draw. But the issue is on defense for the Lions. The …

The Lions offense has had a great season, but the U.City defense has been weak and was no match for Parkway Central in a 57-27 loss in week four.
Since the start of preseason training camp, Parkway Central’s Brandon Sheperd has been one of the most lauded and talked about high school football players in the area. And for good reason. Sheperd was part of a potent Colts attack that jumped all over University City early on Friday night. Sheperd is considered one of the top prep receivers in the nation, and he’s being recruited by nearly every top college program in the Midwest, who all hope that he’ll choose their school to play ball at next season. But on Friday night, a new star emerged for the Colts and stole the show (at least temporarily) from the superstar Sheperd. Central running back Alan Gasanli, who came into Friday’s contest with Suburban South Conference rival University …

The Lions are coming off of a big win last week, but now have to travel to play undefeated Parkway Central in the Colts' homecoming game.
Friday Night Lights: University City (1-2) at Parkway Central (3-0) University City went just 1-9 in the 2010 season, but already earned its first win of this year by stunning Parkway North last week, 25-20. The Lions will visit Parkway Central on Friday night at 7 p.m. in a Suburban South Conference game. Senior quarterback DeAndre Williams had a breakout performance for the Lions, passing for 339 yards and three touchdowns, along with a touchdown run as U. City held off the visiting Vikings in a thrilling early evening game. Williams’ favorite passing targets are Alex Henry and Mario Wallace, a pair of dynamic seniors that make a lot of plays for the Lions offense. Wallace leads the Suburban South in average yards per catch, while Henry …

Senior quarterback DeAndre Williams throws three touchdowns and runs for another in big win for Lions over Vikings.
UNIVERSITY CITY–The University City Lions built a 19-0 lead early in the second half, then had to hold on for dear life, in a 25-20 win over Suburban South Conference rival Parkway North, Friday evening at Muhl-Schemmer Stadium. Senior quarterback DeAndre Williams had a breakout performance in leading U-City to its first win of the season, passing for a career-high 339 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for a score. Teammate Alex Henry caught all three of those scores from Williams, on plays of 13, 26, and 8 yards, with that last one being the eventual game-winner with 7:20 left in the game. Parkway North senior running back Jovonte Suber also had a big day, rushing for 75 yards on 22 carries, along with three touchdowns for a …

Teams total more than 900 yards of total offense, and combine for 11 touchdowns in high-scoring Suburban South Conference affair.
If the first play of the season can be used as any kind of indicator, then the 2011 varsity football campaign is going to mighty exciting for the Parkway West Longhorns. That’s certainly the impression West made during Friday’s season opener at University City High’s Muhl-Schemmer Stadium, when junior Ryan DeMuri ran back the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, that sparked the Longhorns to a 47-33 win over the host Lions. “It does relax you (when you score on the opening kickoff),” West head coach Jeff Duncan said. “But we told our kids, the game’s far from over. (University City) came back on us a little bit. But it was a big play. We’ll take those any time we can get them.” DeMuri’s brilliant return was only the first of several …
