Food Fundraiser at Pete's Shur-Sav

The OES members say they use money from the barbecue fundraiser to provide gifts and holiday parties for residents of a local nursing home

The smoky smell of chicken and ribs wafting from Roosevelt Irving's barbecue pit can raise an appetite from at least a block away.

And that's exactly what the members of the Lillian Victor Scott chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star hoped for as they sold box lunches on Saturday to raise funds for a local nursing home.

Folks who followed the barbecue smell found themselves in the parking lot of the at the corner of Olive Blvd and Hanley Road in University City, where Irving was manning his barbecue pit.

"We're the female arm of the Masons," said Kelly Naugles, the chairperson for the fundraiser. She said the money raised will help provide gifts and holiday parties for the nursing home residents.

Naugles said OES members make a point to visit nursing home residents, especially around the holidays.

"People get lonesome around that time," said Gloria Daniels, a retired nurse who joined the OES a year ago.

Clovise Irving said she volunteers because helping the public is a lot of fun.

This local chapter of the OES has been selling barbecue to raise funds for over a decade. The next fundraising barbecue will be held in the Shur Save parking lot on Saturday, October 15.
