The library's more than just a collection of books

Over the past few months, we at the University City Public Library have been asking our patrons to fill out surveys on the services we offer at the library, and what we can do to best serve the community. We’ve had a great response so far, and many of the things that have been suggested are great ideas.

One thing we’ve realized is that we need to get the word out about some of the great services available and events going on at UCPL. That’s why you’re seeing this article, the first of many regular posts from UCPL on Patch. We see this blog as an opportunity to create an ongoing dialogue with the community, so we can let you know what’s new at UCPL and you can give us continuous feedback.

Recently, the library has added or upgraded a few services that are regularly requested. Last summer, we added a public fax machine and scanner, where patrons can send their own faxes for $1 per page, if the destination is in the U.S. or Canada, or $3 per page internationally. Scanning takes place on the same machine and is completely free. We love showing off our Super Cool Machine (as we’ve dubbed it); just ask at the reference desk and we’ll give you a tour!

And in December, we upgraded our wireless internet system, making wifi access easier (no more library barcodes needed to log in!) and the service faster and stronger. Both the wifi and the fax machine/scanner are available thanks to grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Missouri State Library division of the Missouri Secretary of State.

Keeping with the technology theme, we also offer weekly computer classes, which cover the basics of using a computer, navigating the internet, using web-based email addresses, and using Microsoft Word. These hour-long classes are free and don’t require registration. Stop by the library or check out our website for a schedule of upcoming classes.

We’re also available to help you navigate the often-confusing world of e-readers and e-books, the latter of which you can check out from the library by visiting our website. We’ll be teaching a class on downloading e-books from the library at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6; if you have questions and an e-reader, bring them both and stop on by! If you’re still interested in learning more but can’t make it to the class, just ask for help at the reference desk.
