Traffic Update: Mock Roundabout Construction Begins Today

The new trial traffic design will help the city determine if a roundabout would help traffic flow in the historic plaza area.

The City of University City is shutting down the area at Delmar Blvd. and Trinity at 6 a.m. Tuesday to begin construction work on the mock roundabout.

For worker’s and driver’s safety, Delmar Blvd and Trinity Ave intersection will be closed off and detours set up through Midland-Vernon-Kingsland Avenues for both east and west bound Delmar traffic.

If all goes well, the work should be complete to open by 5 p.m. Thursday, according to Rich Wilson, DIrector of Public Works and Parks.

The temporary design will consist of the installation of about 1,400 feet of asphalt curbing along the edges of Trinity and Delmar and the edges of splitter islands.

Concrete planters and reflective safety barrels will be placed in the inner circle of the roundabout. New pavement markings and signs also will be added to guide pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

The mock roundabout will be up for at least 30 days while the city evaluates traffic and pedestrian safety. The results will be given to city officials so that a determination may be made on the construction of a permanent roundabout.
