Patch Picks: Events and Happenings June 4 - 10

University City Patch teams up with neighboring Patch sites each week to round up events and happenings in the area. Here are our picks for this week.

Monday, June 4

• Could your 9 to 14-year-old use a creative outlet? The presents a class that’s guaranteed to bring out the imagination and creativity of its students, beginning on Monday at 9 a.m. The Up in the Air Class will give students the opportunity to create whimsical, aerial sculptures using simple materials. The class runs all week and will end with an exhibition and reception for students and families. Class fees are $90 for guild members and $115 for non-members. • The reminds pool owners of the federal guidelines on clean water ordinances in relation to pool draining and maintenance. From the city: “Please be advised of the following. Tuesday, June 5

• If you’re in the mood for music but want to stay a little closer to home on Tuesday, consider checking out The Queen Extravaganza at in U. City. • The Centennial Commons Gymnasium in University City will be closed to open play from 5 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday due to the June 5 elections.
• The Mayor’s Task Force on University City’s Bike and Walkability task force will meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday, June 6

• If you’re interested in upping your musical game, you’ll want to know that Wednesday’s the day for summer registration at the Webster University-sponsored Community Music School in University City. The summer session runs from June 13 to July 25. People of all ages and abilities are welcome, and you can just walk in to register between 4 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday. • It’s time for Twangfest! The annual American roots music festival is in its sixteenth year, and beginning Wednesday, you’ll be able to partake in the fun at in University City. The ‘fest will run through Saturday. You can purchase individual event tickets starting at $15 for weekdays and $20 for weekend days, or you can purchase four-day passes. Performers such as Kelly Hogan, Langhorne Slim, Ha Ha Tonka and St. Louis’ own Pretty Little empire and Rough Shop will help round out the event. • The is offering an Intro to Computers Class on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Classes are free and don’t require registration, so just stop by if you need with learning to use a computer. Visit the library’s website for additional details.
• There’s a Brunello Cucinelli Trunk Show at Neiman Marcus at Plaza Frontenac on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• In honor of Black Music Month, the St. Louis County Library Headquarters is offering a screening and discussion of the documentary Strange Fruit, which explores the history and legacy of the Billie Holiday classic. The following discussion will be moderated by Tabari Coleman from ADL’s World of Difference Institute. The event, which happens on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., is recommended for ages 14 and up.

Thursday, June 7

• A special program at the in Ladue hopes to offer “A Powerful Voice for a Child in Foster Care” on Thursday at 7 p.m. The program, Sponsored by Women’s Voices Raised for Social Justice, explains how the Voices for Children and Court-Appointed Special Advocate Program, which trains volunteers to help children and maintain their best interests in court situations. • Bob Edgar, president of Common Cause, will speak at the Ethical Society of St. Louis in Ladue on Friday at 7 p.m. Co-sponsored by the Missouri Progressive Action Group (MOPAG) and the Ethical Society, Edgar will discuss the role of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) in Missouri’s legislative process.
