University City's Travon Williams Named League Player of the Year

University City overcame a four-game, mid-season losing streak to finish 17-10.

It was a season of significant improvement for as the Lions overcame a four-game, mid-season losing streak to finish 17-10.

U City was 10-13 one year ago, but bounced back this season behind Suburban South first team all-conference performer Travon Williams. The 6-foot-3 junior guard has also been named the league’s Player of The Year after averaging 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.6 steals per game.

University City head coach David Gannon saw his Lions go 5-2 in conference play to finish in second place in the Suburban South behind powerhouse Webster Groves (7-0). If the Lions are going to continue to make strides next season, much of the burden will fall upon Williams as Gannon will lose six seniors to graduation.

“I’m proud of my kids,” Gannon told University City Patch. “We’re building this program quick, and I expect us to be as good as this next year.”

Senior guard Prince Cody is among the departing players, and he was named to the Suburban South’s second team. Cody averaged 15.3 points and made a team-best 57 3-pointers. Making the honorable mention squad is senior guard Brandon Wagner, who scored 10.6 points per game this season and had 54 made 3s.

The Lions were 7-6 after that mid-season losing skid, but won 10 of their final 14 games. U City’s season ended on February 25 in the Class 4 District 6 championship game as the Lions fell to Clayton (22-6), 80-70.
