University City Lions Could Not Hold Off Lindbergh

The Lions drop to 6-4 after falling to Lindbergh, 15-5.

After jumping out to a commanding 5-0 lead in the second inning against Lindbergh, appeared to be on its way to back-to-back wins. That was until the Flyers battled back in the bottom of the second inning as Lindbergh tied the game up at 5, en route to a 15-5 win over the Lions.

The loss for the Lions (6-4, 1-0 Suburban South) marked the second loss in three days for University City after defeating Affton, 6-5, in extra innings on Thursday evening.

“We scored five runs in the top of the second inning and the worst thing that you can do is give up those five runs in the bottom of the inning and that deflated us a bit,” University City head coach Rick Seim said.

One of the keys to Lindbergh’s (5-2, 2-0 Suburban West) turnaround in the second inning was a string of two-out hits that punished University City, according to Flyers head coach Darin Scott.

“The main thing is that we were down 5-0 in the second inning and to come right back and get as many two out hits as we did, it’s very demoralizing for your opponent,” Scott said. “U-City’s got a nice ball club and for us to come out and get a big win like this means something for us.”

“We had five hits in that inning and managed to get five runs, but after that we had just one hit and we committed four fielding errors.”

Lindbergh starting pitcher Drew Heinlein won his first game of the 2011 season as he threw a complete game of six innings pitched with four strikeouts and one walk.

“Drew pitched some big games for us last year and he does a nice job of mixing things up,” Scott said. “When he got in there and actually started mixing things, pitches up, he was very effective after that second inning.”

Lindbergh’s Sean Murphy was solid at the plate for the Flyers as he went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Murphy is currently batting .391 this season.

University City starting pitcher Will Evans took the loss as he gave up 13 runs on 12 hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched. The senior hurler also recorded five strikeouts and one walk in his first loss of the 2011 campaign.

“He threw about 90 pitches and I thought he had a pretty gutsy performance,” Seim said. “He had some off speed stuff that was working at times, but then again we can’t make a pitch at the right time and we give up an extra out and that’s, unfortunately, what happens.”

University City will play at Ladue on Monday at 4 p.m.
