Two University City Wrestlers Competing at State

The 81st State Wrestling Championships conclude on Saturday night at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.

The University City Lions wrestlers may not have made a big impact as a team in their recent district tournament, but the Lions will still be represented by a pair of wrestlers at the state championships this week.

The 81st MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships began on Thursday, and concludes on Saturday night at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Mo.

University City placed 11th out of 14 teams at last weekend’s Class 3 District 2 tourney at Ft. Zumwalt East High School. Senior Jeremiah Hathorn took second place at 145 pounds to qualify for state and brings a 36-6 season record into the state championships.

Junior Tarique Jefferson qualified by placing third at 215 pounds, and is 36-10 this season.

Lions coach Pat Oligschlaeger expected his team to be hard-pressed to put up many team points, but is pleased to be traveling with two of his kids to Columbia.

“We only took six kids to district,” he said. “”We did as well as expected. Going in, we were hoping to get a few out and pick up some points.”

St. Charles West qualified nine wrestlers and won the district team title. The top four wrestlers in each district in each weight class qualify for state. The top four teams at state take home a trophy while the top six placers in each weight class earn a state medal.
