UNC's Holden Thorp Named New Provost at Wash U
Thorp will succeed Edward Macias, who held the provost and executive vice chancellor position at Washington University for 25 years.
Washington University in St. Louis named Holden Thorp of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill as the university's new provost.
Thorp, 48, will begin his tenure after he completes his term at UNC on June 30.
The provost position is Wash U's chief academic officer. Thorp will succeed for 25 years. Macias joined the University in 1970 and is retiring this year.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Chancellor Mark Wrighton said Thorp’s track record as an academic, researcher and administrator prompted him to recommend him to the committee seeking Macias’ replacement.
“He is among the most respected educators in higher education,” Wrighton told the Post. “In Holden, we have a person who is still young in his career chronologically and Washington University is fortunate to have him as it has much to do in a short period of time.”

Thorp told the UNC staff via an email that he was excited about the move to St. Louis. The email was released to the News Observer. In it, Thorp wrote:
My new positions will enable me to return to my passions of teaching and research while, at the same time, as the chief academic officer, will allow me to continue many of the administrative duties that I’ve enjoyed as chancellor.
