UCHS to Dedicate Gym Next Month in Honor of Coach Edward Crenshaw

The gymnasium will be named in honor of Coach Edward Crenshaw, who coached the UCHS basketball team from 1974 to 1997.

University City High School will honor two outstanding alum next month by naming the school's gymnasium and basketball court after them.

The gym will be named in honor of Coach Edward Crenshaw, who served as a physical education teacher and boys' basketball coach at UCHS from 1974 to 1997. During his tenure, Crenshaw logged more wins than any other boys’ basketball coach at University City High School. Crenshaw is tenth in the list of Missouri high school coaches with the most wins.

He received the same accolade from last December, where he coached from 1960 until 1974, before leaving for University City High School. St. Dominic's named its gymnasium Crenshaw Court, according to O'Fallon Patch.

In an article published last December, the St. Louis Post Dispatch reported that Crenshaw is battling Alzheimer's.

The Hasan Houston Court pays homage to Hasan Houston, a three-sport letterman (baseball, football and basketball) from the UCHS Class of 1976 who was drafted into the NBA by the Houston Rockets but played professional football for the Chicago Bears.

The dedication ceremony is planned for Friday, Jan. 20, in the high school gymnasium. The dedication will happen around 6:30 pm - between the girls and boys varsity basketball games against Webster Groves.

The UCHS girls varsity game begins at 5:00 p.m., and the boys varsity game begins at 7:00 p.m. An admission charge of $5 covers both games and the dedication ceremony between games.

The Board of Education approved the honorary naming last year, but the formal dedication was held until basketball season.
