Superintendent Invites Michelle Obama to Opening of Barbara C. Jordan

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for Barbara C. Jordan Elementary is set for early April.

When the school district opens up Barbara C. Jordan Elementary School in early April, it's clearly going to be a community celebration. But how about a presidential celebration?

Superintendent of Schools Joylynn Wilson Pruitt said she has extended an invitation to first lady Michelle Obama to attend the ribbon cutting.

"We've not heard back yet, but we know she's into gardening, so we talked about U City In Bloom. We talked about ," said Pruitt at a community police meeting Tuesday night at the Heman Park Community Center.

"We know she's on a very tight schedule, but we're trying our best,"Pruitt said. "If she gets here or not, it is truly going to be a major celebration, because for us it's been a long time coming."

Pruitt said students in University City have written letters to Mrs. Obama, extending the invite.
