Late Wednesday afternoon a staff member found an unloaded and inoperable firearm at the Lieberman Learning Center – the alternative school located at 8136 Groby Road – that is separate from our other school facilities.

District administrators immediately turned the weapon over to University City police and launched an investigation to identify the person(s) responsible for bringing the weapon to the Center. We identified a student who is currently being questioned by police.

The safety and well being of our students and staff is one of our highest priorities, so principals, classroom staff, and administrators are trained to implement our safety policies and procedures.

Missouri law prohibits us from sharing specific information about minors, so out of respect for the law and this student’s privacy, we cannot share any identifying information about the student.

No matter what the intent, we have a zero-tolerance policy for bringing weapons into the school environment. Please know that the District will take corrective action against the person(s) responsible for this incident in accordance with the District’s Discipline Handbook.

We are sending a letter home tonight encouraging parents to consider this incident as an opportunity to remind children that weapons are not allowed on school property and to report unsafe situations to a teacher or other trusted adult.
