School District Makes Nathaniel Hawthorne Surplus Property

The move clears the way for the building to be sold and repurposed.

The School District of University City made Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School surplus property Thursday, paving the way for the school district to sell the property.

In June, Tim Persons & Associates proposed converting the empty school building into senior apartments.

The firm noted at the meeting the great neighborhood surrounding the school building, located at 1351 North Hanley Road, and the nearby access to transportation, goods and services as some of the draws to repurposing the historic building.
