School District Could Make Nathaniel Hawthorne Building Surplus Property

The School District of University City meets Thursday night.

The School District of University City could make Nathaniel Hawthorne Elementary School surplus property Thursday, paving the way for the school district to sell the property.

The board meets at 7 p.m. Thursday at the McNair Administration buidling.

In June, Tim Persons & Associates proposed converting the empty school building into senior apartments.

The firm noted at the meeting the great neighborhood surrounding the school building, located at 1351 North Hanley Road, and the nearby access to transportation, goods and services as some of the draws to repurposing the historic building.

The school itself could house 30 senior apartment units, and additional villa units could be built around the school on surrounding property.

Other items on the school board agenda include:

  • Highly Qualified Staff Recommendations
  • Resolution to Sustain House Bill 253
  • K-5 Math Curriculum, Materials and Resources Adoption
  • Developmental Reading Assessment 2nd Edition
