School Board Recognizes University City Teacher of the Year; Student Volunteers Involved in Brittany Woods Makeover

U City Board of Education recognized high school student receiving UMSL's newly established Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Science and volunteers who helped transform Brittany Woods over their spring break.

The University City Board of Education recognized a wide range of community members at its meeting on Thursday night.

The recipients of the University City Teacher and Educational Support Personnel of the Year were announced. Cassandra Conner of U City High School was named Teacher of the Year. Conner teaches chemistry, human anatomy and physiology at UCHS. She's finishing her second year of teaching in University City. According to a District press release, Connor motivates students by sending regular postcards to parents regarding the students’ academic successes. 

The District named Charlotte Tatum of the McNair Administration Center, Educational Support Personnel of the Year. Tatum has worked in the District since 1985. In her current position as the administrative coordinator to the Board of Education, she maintains Board meeting minutes and other records, facilitates communication with Board members and provides additional support to administrators. She regularly volunteers with mentorship programs for students.

Conner and Tatum will be honored at the next Board of Education meeting on April 21.

Also at Thursday's Board of Education meeting, Dan Egan, a student at UCHS, was presented with the UMSL Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Science. Superintendent Joylynn Pruitt praised Egan for his commitment to school and the hard work that led him to his award.

Finally, the board recognized the student volunteers who used a Lowe's grant to makeover the Brittany Woods teacher workroom, lounge and restroom over their spring break. The students made the areas more appealing, painting and repairing walls, cabinets and the like. The board stood together in thanking the group for sacrificing their time off to help improve the district and their community.
