Roof Repairs on Tap for U City High School Gym

The district's board approved a repair contract Thursday.

The School District of University City school board approved spending $21,000 to fix the roof of the gym at University City High School.

The roof is leaking and needs an immediate fix, according to the district's executive director of operations Karl Scheidt.

The district sought bids for the project. Three bidders submitted for the project:

  • Lakeside Roofing — $24,418

Taylor, the low bidder, was awarded the contract. Taylor also is currently the contractor for roofing work at Pershing Elementary School.

Scheidt said an independent company assessed the damage to the roof. There are leaks, rotting wood and a breach in the surface of the roof.

According to the bid, the scope of the work is as follows: "removal of Spanish tile from the four gables and a 10 by 15 area on the northwest side of the gymnasium, repairing all the bad wood in these areas, installation of weatherproof underlayment and reinstallation of the Spanish tile."

Scheidt told the board this repair would solve the immediate issues while the district sought a long-term solution to repair or replace the aging roof on the high school gymnasium.

The Spanish tiles on the roof will be taken off and put back on once the repairs are complete.

The school board approved the measure unanimously.
