Pershing Gymnasium Named for Richard Dockett

Richard Dockett, one of the most involved citizens in the area, was honored Thursday by the School District of University City. The gymnasium at Pershing Elementary School will bear Dockett's name. 

This is the second major honor in the past few months for Dockett. At a January city council meeting, Mayor Shelley Welsch declared Jan. 19, 2013, as Richard Dockett day in University City.

Dockett has attended city and school meetings for years, in addition to his involvement in his neighborhood.

The measure to name the gym for Dockett was proposed by Board Secretary Rodney Jennings.

The measure reads: 

Mr. Richard Dockett is an active community member who resides in the Third Ward of University City. Mr. Dockett has tirelessly fought for education, equal justice and economic opportunities in the School District of University City and the City of University City for more than 40 years. He raised his children in the District and also served as a guardian and protector of children, particularly at Pershing Elementary School.

Mr. Dockett has been instrumental in assuring quality education and fairness in the District in construction, hiring and curriculum. He is truly an asset and protector of our schools and city. Most recently, he was named as "Ambassador of Pershing School" due to his involvement and dedication.
